What do you do to focus, to mentally prepare yourself for an involved task?

I listen to Eno or other ambient background music while working, depending on the task. Some tasks require silence.

To focus my thought process, I usually think of the positive, beneficial outcome of what I'm doing, and then begin to feel the importance of my task.

The rough part is task avoidance and initial self discipline. There are a lot of things floating around in my mind at any given time, and I have trouble blocking them all out.

What suggestions might you have? I welcome all vitamin; meditation; exercise; sleep; nutrition; brain entertainment, rest and relaxation cycle; and general tips that help one achieve a deep level of focus.

Strong cup of tea with 8 sugars. Known locally as the Builder's Brew, since local bricklayers/workmen use that to give themselves an energy spurt which usually crashes about half an hour later, at which point just pop a mint or low cal sweet to keep yourself ticking over. It's amazing how underrated sugar is as a stimulate, especially for tasks that require focus.

Good luck! :)

I was listening to Discreet Music a couple weeks ago while reading my government textbook and I was stuck on a p age for like 25 minutes.

Discreet Music is based on classical music. It's proto ambient. Try Music for Airports. It's as unintrusive as it gets.

Eno's Ambient 4 On Land brings sanity to me.

Cleaning the pipes before, during, and after a stressful mental-focus activity helps.

The white noise of a humming fan also helps. Usually I can't sleep without it.

For those who can't take Eno, try recordings of ocean waves. Some such nature recordings can even be found laced with sub-audible (subliminal) suggestions for stopping procrastination, loosing weight, or other motivations.
