What do you think about a used import online store?

I was thinking about the state of import gamers in the US/Euro/anywhere that's not Asia and I've noticed there are two major annoyances.

1. Unlike Japan, where game prices drop weekly, and gamers can buy a month old used game for $20-30 less than the new price, those living in the west never see any price drops. Want a game that's 2 years old? Unless it's been re-released in greatest hits type packaging it's still gonna be $60-70 + shipping.

2. There's no where besides Ebay and maybe GAF threads to sell used imports. In Japan you can beat a game or decide you don't really like it and then walk into any game store and sell it back for 70%+ what you've paid for depending on how old it is and other factors. But in the US you can't just walk into EB and sell off your old imports.

So I was thinking what if there was an online store that specialized entirely in used import games. The store would take the Japanese approach of A/B/C/D condition, with D meaning in pretty bad shape but still runs perfectly and A being pristine good-as-new quality, and list buying prices of all import games at the various condition levels. People would then send in their game and the store would check it out and rate the quality and offer the price that goes with that game+condition level. If the person says "ok", the store would pay them, if the person says "no" the store would ship the game back to them.

Then the store would sell these games and of course sell them at different prices depending on the condition level with probably about a $3 drop per level so a D quality version that still runs is $15 cheaper than an A quality version that's still $15-20 cheaper than a new copy at any online import store. That way people could buy import games at $20-40 cheaper and could make some money selling back their old imports for $20-40.

I dunno, I just find it annoying that I have a decent amount of import games in perfect condition I'd like to dump off for real money but there isn't really a place to sell them besides e-bay.

I think it would be a good idea. I'd buy from you, if you had anything I wanted. So would others.

We are in the same quandry here in the UK, for example I emailed a games store called CEX and asked how much they would give me for a ceramic white PSP, they responded with "I'm sorry but we don't accept import consoles", now if you know their site and I do pretty well I have been selling them import games that I had played for the best part of 3 years now and they don't complain but they do sometimes pay out high markups on games I got £31 for Winning Eleven 8 - I purchased it 2 months earlier for £34.

But now they wont even accept anything imported and they still sell them instore/online which is a major annoyance.

The only alternative is to maybe sell your foreign games online on forums like GAF or maybe shove them on Ebay which is in the process of slowly but surely going to the dogs. imo. SO many damn scammers.

So Bebpo.... what japanese delights do you have to offer us?

Such is the way of life. America doesn't regard videogames in the same class as movies, which is why there's a huge disparity in finding older titles.

Just be glad there's an online market to dump off your junk.

play-asia does sell some used stuff. but it's still pretty costly.

i'd rather not pay 60 bucks for Ka 2, or that IREM fire-fighting game. the only other option is yahoo japan auctions through Rinkya. and even then you get nailed on commission fee's and shipping.

I'd buy shit all the time. I was actually thinking about buying some imports yesterday, but even old ones are expensive as hell. Even for a re-release after shipping you're looking at $35-40 bucks still.

Yeah, umm I want to make sure people know that I'm not in the process of opening up a store or anything as I don't really have the funds to do something major like that. But I'm just judging interest as something that I could possibly do in a few years.

Or if anyone else wants to take this idea and run with it...feel free to do so! I will sell you my games! :)

In the UK there are UK-centric gaming forums with active trade/sell forums where you can shift imports without having to go through eBay, PayPal or any of that nastiness.

I mean, the shmups.com forums are great for this sort of thing, but it's obviously genre-limited, and it only really works because it's such a small community.

That's a pretty good idea.

I gotta say, though, I just recently discovered the wonder that is Ebay Japan and Yahoo Japan auctions. So many cheap, good stuff. Only problem is it might be tough/time consuming to browse through if you don't know Japanese.

Link?

I think it's a good idea, especially if you can improve on the customer service policy of the last company to do this (Buyrite)

Japanese games are too expensive even in Japan. It would be nice to be able to import them for a reasonable price, and used is the best way to do this.

I've seen a few of these kinds of stores back in the days, both online and offline. The offline stores tend to lose out eventually cause the draw of import games wears off rather quickly for those who can't speak Japanese. Add on top of that the high cost to get these games shipped to the US either by going to shop yourself or simply air shipping, not only drives your prices upwards, but it's hard to conpete with the likes of NCS.

Online wise, it's difficult to get used games in because people simply wouldn't send the games unless they are paid, but then you couldn't be sure if they are in good conditions, either that or you choose to take in games at the same lowest common denominator price, but that would drive away those who keep their games in nice conditions. The online ones I've seen before usually have very very limited selections, and sell very close to new games prices, but I guess that doesn't really differ from how gamestop or eb does it. Since that's the only way you'll be able to make money, you then fall into the trap that most of the import scene in the US are rich collectors who wants the latest stuff brand new at the fastest speed, which a used game store won't really provide. I'm not saying it's not doable, but I just think it's something that would be just as hard to succeed as any gamestore.

this wouldn't work cause if you expect prices to drop the store will have to account for that on top of their margins, which means they won't be giving you top dollar for your games

That's because of Sony's crackdown. That wasn't a problem before the US launch and you usually don't have a problem with other machines. Having said that, CEX is way too variable to be considered a good source of bargains. They are a true rip off for some stuff.

There are a few sites out there that already do this---Yamatoku and Palet both come to mind---but neither has a good selection of current-gen software, nor does either appear to do the volume of business in the US necessary to take advantage of the economies of shipping in bulk then reshipping in-country. I think it's a problem of massive amounts of capital being necessary relative to the low possible profit.

That said, I'd patronize such a site if it existed and the overhead made it feasible---remember, you'd have to pay a bit more than going price in Japan to pick up fresh material, lacking a storefront, (and forget about it in the US, where almost all importers tend to be collectors) yet would have to keep prices competitive even after your own shipping costs.

markinjapan did this for years, didn't he?

Yes, as did several others, like Video Game Depot and (I forget the name but I think it was) Wolfgames. The store I worked at for 10 years also did the same thing for quite some time. While you do make more profit on used games than you do on new ones, in this day and age, it's not going to be profitable enough to work. Seems like there's far less people importing games these days, what with more releases making their way Stateside and to Europe, games being released in the U.S. before Japan, and the lack of simple to use converters for all the current systems.

Having to ship the games in for inspection, followed by a quote, and then possibly sending the game back if both parties can't agree on a price could drive overhead up in a hurry. If someone wanted to sell used JP games to a Western clientele, it would be better to setup a brick and mortar operation inside Japan that can just as well sell to locals as well as overseas. This way, one could keep certain games off the shelves in the storefront, so that they are designated specifically for online purchases. If the unit doesn't move after a pre-determined time, move it to the shelves where hopefully a customer will walk in and buy it. Hell, if you're running it from Japan, you can stock up on high-demand used games by hitting other used game stores, then selling the games online for $5-10 more than you paid for them if you wanted to.

The prices of used and discounted older games on Play-Asia is a ripoff compared to Japan prices in store (with shipping and conversion and whatnot). If a store specially tailored to this were made, with Japanese used standards (i.e. a D is way better than most western pre-owned games), then I'd be a frequent customer.
