Do almost all DVD burners do dual-sided discs now?

What are the possibilties for "Lightscribe"? ie, how nice can the labels get?

I have a lite-on drive , been working great for me for over a year and i burn everything from movies to ps2 games :) i'd recommend lite - on

Huh? I thought Lite-Ons became the standard for price/performance for a while.
They're the best when it comes to reading data, but for writing, they suck compared to NEC or Pioneer (or Plextor, if you have the money). They're vastly superior in writing quality.

Pioneer is actually the best, but their drives will sacrifice everything for the sake of media burn quality. If your media is rated at 16x but the firmware has it marked as crappy media (like Ritek 16x media), they make the max speed 4x. Whereas Lite-On will just burn it as fast as possible. NEC does too, but it also changes write strategies on the fly trying to give the most reliable burn at the media's rated speed. If you look at the back of the disc after it burns, you'll see that the laser changed positions many times during the burning process, repositioning itself and adjusting laser strength constantly. They're great drives.

If you want the NEC drive with free shipping, it's this weekend only, btw.

Well, that was in the CD-RW drive era. They became an industry giant and forced their competitors to lower the price of their units and actually helped to make CD recording democratic among PC users, in a sense. They're irrelevant, unreliable, and noisy now. And they don't have the pricing point advantage anymore.

Now I think that most burners will do any task pretty well. Get a good drive from either BenQ, Pioneer, NEC and you can't really go wrong. Take what's on sale. It's not worth it to invest a lot in that. Buy quality media instead, from Taiyo Yuden preferably.

WTF? What's with all this LiteOn bashing? :( I have a LiteOn external, because my NEC drive *DIED,* and I couldn't be happier with both the read AND write capability.

Get the NEC ND-3550A. I use the 3540A, it's an excellent drive. You can't go wrong with NEC (or Pioneer, and if you have the money, Plextor).

Whatever you do, DO NOT get a Lite-On. And buy oem (from sites like newegg), you save money.

$34.99, free shipping! Can't beat it.

Wow, I can vouch for two things in this post...I have the NEC 3550A and it's been FLAWLESS! It's my first DVD burner and I love it!

Also, though I didn't get a PC drive, I got a standalone DVD recorder by Lite-On, and the POS would screw up randomly when finalizing the disk, and eventually it just died period. I even upgraded the firmware and it still didn't improve the coster-rating. POS!

*Edit* I should also note that with the NEC burner, I was able to burn at 16x with Sony DVD+Rs that were rated at 8x with no problems. I've used DVD+Rs from Sony, HP, and Verbatim and all work great.

the latest liteons (all the ones for sale at newegg) are just as good at writing as nec's, and they are superior readers...

i mean, not tha nec's are bad at reading or anything, either would be a good choice...
