What is the best free audio player that isn't Winamp?

Winamp is REALLY pissing me off with its craptasticness. I don't want 2.91, either. What is the best audio player? From reading the FAQ, Foobar2000 has too many dumb little quirks. There's got to be something I just don't know about.

Windows Media Player.

Stop with all the crappy 3rd party efforts. Media Player does it's job and does it well.

iTunes rocks though, and you don't need an iPod to use it.

Ugh, I've been having problems with Winamp(5) lately. It freezes and is unresponsive and slow. I'm looking into alternatives as well.

Yeah, Winamp has randomly decided to start crashing Windows everytime I try to listen to an mp3. And after I uninstalled it, it won't let me delete winamp.exe.

I always use WMP for video and sometimes for mp3. It has a better taskbar miniplayer than any winamp plugin I've seen

foobar2000. Love the simple design and the ease of making huge, tabbed playlists. Haven't experienced any more weird quirks than with other players I've used.

foobar2000 is quite good, but you have to access a freaking menu everytime you wanna change the volume. thats just stupid.

I use iTunes personally and that's my own personal recommendation, although a lot of people like Foobar after some customization. I'd avoid Windows Media Player, as I think even for being free and pre-loaded on Windows, it's half-assed compared to the alternatives.

Compact meaning what? Real estate on the screen? Installation size? Impact on system resources?

This man knows the truth. Foobar is good look for some of the more advacned tweaked version over the 2000 version.

Real estate on the screen?
I would happily strangle whoever decided to migrate 'real estate' into the desktop (especially design) world.

Is this Winamp weirdness because of a new release or is it just a sudden issue?

just leave it on max and adjust your speaker's volume. also foobar is as small or big as you want it.

I've been having issues with Winamp lately as well. It doesn't make sense, since I've used it forever...but I just can't stand using it anymore.

Lately, I've been using WMP, but I not too familiar with the program and it seems to be a resource hog.

But Foobar is huge and ugly. I want something compact.

Does anyone have opinions on QCD (http://www.quinnware.com/index.php) or (cringes) iTunes?
+Nice all in one interface for playing, ripping, and encoding
+ Winamp 2.x plugin compatibility

- MP3 sound quality not quite as clear as Winamp (you probably won't notice it though)
- There's no way to save a music library as in Winamp, so all your files must be loaded each time the program is opened, which takes forever
- Max number of folders in library is 250

i've used the latest version (4.51 IIRC) and there's been no updates in months. With a little work, it could be comparable to Winamp.

I don't like iTunes, takes up too many resources. I feel the same way with most of Apple's apps, like Quicktime too, they just seem clunky. I guess that's the price you pay to have it look nice, brushed metal look and all :p

Then again it could be my PC, but still.

iTunes has the best library management. One thing I absolutely like is that I can download a bunch of MP3s from wherever, drag them from my desktop into iTunes, then iTunes copies them to the iTunes directory on my D drive and puts them in the library. Then I just delete the MP3s off my desktop. So instead of me going through a bunch of folders and managing the songs on my own, iTunes does it all for me.

If WMP did this one feature, I'd switch immediately. WMP has superior audio quality when using some of the great plug-ins available.

Winamp 5 has been crashing for me during streaming stuff. It's annoying as hell, but I still prefer it to everything else.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Wow, I had no idea the latest winamp is causing so many people problems.

The only problem i've had is where the playlist will occasionally be black. Closing the playlist window and reopening it solves the problem, but it's pretty rare that it even occurs.

I've been having winamp problems as well. The music stutters sometimes. I wonder why this is happening. It's never given me problems before.

Those of you having problems or inadequacies with Winamp should really search the Winamp forums for help. i've had a few issues and the posts on the forums fixed my problems within minutes.

And i've started using WMP10 a bit more to rip a couple of CDs. It's extremely fast ripping to 320kpbs MP3s. Like iTunes, it rips and encodes in one step, despite the "Ripping..." label on the progress bar. Not sure if you can play songs will ripping them though. If it had full FLAC support and a more flexible filename editor, i'd switch. And no Shog, i know about WM Lossless. i'm not having another format on my drive unless it's absolutely necessary.

Not true.. Use the +/- keys on the keyboard. You can also make your own global hotkeys if you want.

I am all about iTunes for regular listening and foobar2000 for background usage (like when I am playing WoW or some other game that uses a lot of resources). Very happy with both.
