i joined it once thinking people would be posting and chatting on it but if i remember right it just has links to posts on here. i don't really get it. maybe it's changed?

Posting to get a watched thread. But yeah, hopefully we talk in the forum and discord is more for....time wasting chatting among internet or IRL friends? I mean, they could do like Agora Rd and have chat be built into the XenForo forum software server I suppose, but I don't much want to chat via forum software or discord, I go forum threads -> split threads -> group chats -> DMs in forum -> DMs IRL via whatever platform, discord is a strange stopover that doesn't appeal to me as much, but this is not about me, just trying to give more content than just '+1 I am wondering too'

I just can't get into discord. The way it spools threads seems like it's only really good for an active discussion at the moment, not carefully considered, weighty, intellectual ponderings about the universe, like here on Gaf :p

Reddit is only slightly better than discord in readability, at least you can sorta sort things. Facebook is terrible as well. The decline of the internet forum is such a travesty. Now newsnet groups, THOSE were the bee's knees!

I think the only good reason is to continue the discussion if you got banned. ;) I'm doing that for r/formula 1 since the reddit mods ban people extremely easy if you don't agree with opinions on certain topics or pushing certain ideologies. ;)

In all honesty, I’ve found its most reliable function is as a place to go for updates when GAF is down.

It’s the emergency bunker. It’s there if you need it, but until then the rest of the house has all the niceties so you won’t see too much going on down there.

Ive not seen the discord because I try to stay out of walled off web properties, but

And of course the RSS feeds work even if they are lost technology to us old feed reader users.

I like the idea of the discord as the emergency bunker, but given my druthers, everyone involved would know that it was mostly for purposes like that and not as the main point of the site.

Not because I want to discourage people who like the discord or find a functionality in it from using it, I just don't want all of the momentum and activity to drift towards the private chat service from the forum, rather than what I want to be the opposite direction.

Anytime there's a discord around it just reminds me of the bad old days of activity in the forums shifting to private social media service walled off propertues 10 years ago, so I'm gun shy about that. And old.
