What is the point of North Korea?

Looking at how awesome South Korea is doing, what the hell is going on in North Korea? South Korea has an amazing entertainment industry with films and music. South Korea has great electronic companies like Samsung and LG. North Korea has nothing. Since the 1960's South Korea's economy has grow exponentially while the people of North Korea starve and suffer because of their leader's ideology.

North Korea looks like a wasteland from the pictures I've seen and there could be a great opportunity for growth in many areas.

Will there ever be a day where South Korea takes over North Korea or something along those lines where Korea can become one? Imagine South Korea x2. I know that would be impossible since North Korea is allied with countries like China and Russia; those countries seem well off, while North Korea seems like a weird example of how not to run your country.

Is there some way for North Korea to become economically strong and have growth for its people? I'm just curious about North Korea because it seems so mysterious and sad.

The simplest explanation for the success of South Korea and the hell that is North Korea is essentially openness and freedom. South Korea is an open and free economy. North Korea is not. It's government is a cult of personality ruled by an insane dictator.

No one can afford, nor do they want, to babysit North Korea, so the situation there won't get better anytime soon.

North korea has failed mainly because of commie-hating american protectionism and trade embargos.
Right, it's all our fault for our commie-hating. Has nothing to do with the volatile fucking nutjob running the place.

No point really. It's ruled by a dictator that keeps the people so hungry that they can't fight back.

Real question is: Would reunification of the north and the south kill the economy? All those people with no jobs.

I think the best thing would for it to be its own country, with a strong trade between China, SK, and other countries, while building its own economical foundation.

If I could choose where I respawn I'd choose North Korea just to see what it's like. Then I could uncover their secret plans to ally with a civilisation they found underground that they've been hiding from the rest of the world, and free the people and become a hero to lead humanity against the people from below.

Depends on how brainwashed Kim Jong Il's son is.

If he truly believes North Korea is Best Korea then nothing will change for the foreseeable future.

Top brass also needs to wither away.

There is a concept that is uniquely Korean. It is called "han." It's a sorrow so deep that you cannot cry about it. It weighs on your heart, and your soul. It haunts it.

Even as Korean was freed from Japanese consolidation, it had to be split in two, because the Korean people must have "han."

Is there any where I can read up on this?

Yeah, there's nothing about sublimal about his message.

Bringing NK up to par with even China would be a long and costly process, much worse than German re-unification and that's still not done (well, we're at least still taxed for it). SK probably couldn't handle it on its own.

They serve as amusement fodder for China every time they do something to make the USA and SK go "Oh Kim, you so crazy!"

Call a country whatever you want, including communist. The label doesn't matter when the economy is free. Look at Hong Kong. They can call it a "special administrative region" but it's a capitalist economy.
I have no idea how our posts are related.

Sounds pretty lame. Can't someone just tell them to get over it, or show them Ethiopia and say "at least this isn't your country"?

After the Korean War, North Korea was actually more prosperous than South Korea. It wasn't until after the collapse of the Soviet Union that everything turned to shit for the North.

Son allegedly handled the sinking of the Cruiser operation and I've heard the shelling incident as means to boost his non-existent military and leadership rep.

Neither China nor South Korea could handle the influx of tens of millions of impoverished uneducated North Korean refugees should North Korea collapse. In the modern era, the world would frown upon China for gunning down all the refugees as they run across the border.

That's why North Korea exists, it has too many people nobody else wants.

No the South eclipsed the North way back in the 1970s and has never looked back. Nk even with support started declining in the 1970s.

What do you mean? I'm just talking Korea.

They claim to have a very extensive subway system with frequent headways. But if you actually visit they will only show you two stations. If the rest of the subway system does exist, it likely does not operate trains but serves as underground bunkers.

It made no sense because you're post was about something entirely different than he said.
We do hate communists, but the point is that the label doesn't really matter. Parts of China are more free and open than the United States, and that's where growth and prosperity are born.

North Korea have struggled. I wonder what Kim jong il's son will accomplish. It would be nice to to see the peninsula united someday
I'd also like to see another island united but that that's another kettle of fish

Some say the successor is even crazier than his father.

North Korea is really fascinating. It's a great example of what would happen if an Internet forums moderator was put in charge of a whole nation.

Someone should just send a team to Assassinate all the top brass, let the country implode on itself, and then rebuild it from the ground up.

I just watched a short documentary about NK from Netflix. I'm fascinated, perplexed and saddened by what is going on there.

I kept thinking, why don't these people rise up? But they can't. They're so tightly controlled there's no hope. They're also brainwashed beyond belief. For 60 years they've been cut off from the world and hand fed information for 2 to 3 generations now. They believe what they're told because there is nothing else.

Kim Jong-il decided to let an eye doctor into the country. When people get their eyes fixed, they praise a giant picture of the Eternal President and his son instead of the doctor while at the same time condemning America.

I'm just waiting for that regime's eventual collapse. How badly must they fail their people until it's over for them?

They are not hurting anybody except themselves, why would you want to do this?

Their refusal to care for their people allows them to pump what little resources they have into their military might. They seem incompetent for the most part, but I think they might be able to do some major damage.

Sooner or later, we're going to have to deal with North Korea, whether later or down the road.
We shouldn't have anything to do with it. Koreans from there have to be the ones to take control. Sadly it might never happen.

loul
First, let the world see when the people from NY to LA take control of the USA.

A buffer for China. China would rather see NK stay a primitive country than evolve to the point of maybe reuniting with SK.
