what jrpg are you playing right now ?

Oh, so it gets better? I'm currently about 6 hours in and kind of bored. The game is really easy and the story is moving slowly. If these problems are fixed later on, I'm willing to keep going.
Yeah, I thought the first eight or so hours were pretty horrible, but once you get a full party, and some liberation, it takes a notable step up, for me at least.

I'm on the second disc of Wild ARMs 2. This game might be the easiest RPG I've ever played. I put some points into P DEF for all of my characters and bosses regular attacks literally do 0 damage. And if a boss does an attack that hits all, a First Aid from Tim takes care of it. I bet there will probably be some superbosses like the first Wild ARMs that provide the challenge but....

Playing through Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, tough call if it is a jrpg though. It is made by a Japanese studio, but it is more of a western rpg like Dark Souls. A more traditional jrpg Im playing is Ni No Kuni, it is a beautiful game but there is a few overpowered things that are too easy to figure out. Once you find them it breaks the game and it becomes boring imo, so Im having to handicap myself to keep things interesting. I really enjoy the art, story, and the combat is pretty good as well minus the overpowered mechanic. Wish they would add a tougher difficulty, or patch the overpowered things. Trying to be vague, so not to spoil it for others.

Awesome. In that case, I'm definitely going to keep going. I really want to like the game because it's so beautiful to look at, haha.

After triumphing over Ni No Kuni, I began my foray into Mother 3 to continue the trend of light-heartedness.
Not cool man, the first hour hurts my heart.
But the game is pretty nice. School and work keep getting in the way though.

I'm currently playing through Final Fantasy VI for the first time on my vita. I must say, I can very well see why people hold it so highly.

Just started the Star Ocean series. Gonna play through 1 and 2 for sure and I've got 3 ordered.
I have yet to see if I'll be so disgusted by the end of this that I want to suffer through the pain I hear 4 is.

Wild ARMs is a series I played when it first came out, which is probably over 10 years ago now. I remember really enjoying them a lot, well the first 3, I haven't played any past those. Never gone back to them though, wonder how I'd like 'em today. I remember getting into the characters and setting in 2 but now all I can remember is
a vampire(?) woman who had something to do with robots
that I thought was the coolest character ever at the time. All the other details have disappeared from my memory.

Gonna spoil tag that because I don't remember if any of it is a spoiler or not haha.

I'm playing Wild Arms 3 with Aeana. I like it so far. I've just completed the prologue. The main character's dress width makes it hard for me to take her seriously. I like puzzle dungeons and there are very few modern RPGs with those these days. Mostly just battley dungeon crawls.

Persona 3 FES On PS3 (only $5 now!).

One of the best games I've played this year, I'm about 30 hours in, can't wait to play P4G (this was my intro to the series).

I'm playing Final Fantasy 7 for the first time.

Started this playthrough like a year and a half ago, but i'm determined to finish it. I've only ever had one part of the story spoiled for me (Aeris), so everything is fresh. It's really been a treat so far, but the english translation is...immature, in every sense of the word.

WA 2 is such a poorly balanced game in that regard. It's also really, really ugly. Kinda makes me wished they had kept the hand drawn art style in 1 and had 3D in battles only. The translation also makes me scratch my head regularly. Like those two comic relief enemies you run into.

Fantastic soundtrack and some memorable dungeon puzzles. It's also nice to have a nice big world to explore. Fiddling around town and scanning for hidden treasure was so cool! Same goes with being able to cancel battles if you don't want to fight. And the last battle song is something I will always remember because of how pumped it made me feel.

Since you're playing the PS3 version, make sure to keep multiple save files, and I also suggest checking to make sure your save was done properly before fighting bosses and turning the game off (if it's not done right, the file will say 4/1 or whenever the game starts).

You've probably aware of the save issue already, but I thought I'd mention it just in case. I would have been extremely pissed if I lost progress because of the glitchy saves.

Playing Valkyria Chronicles. Lots of interesting things you can do with the game engine, more depth than your average JRPG for sure.

Where's the game $5? It's in the Store? I thought the only version there was P3P

They have P3 FES as a PS2 classic. Bought it a couple weeks ago for $5. This is for NA, not sure if it's up for other regions.

EDIT: https://store.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/#!/en-us/cid=UP9000-NPUD21621_00-0000000000000000

There you go. It was originally $10 (and it was actually $10 while I was still trying to decide which version to get. When I went back to the store a few days later, FES is $5 and P3P is still $20. Kinda made my decision for me)

I'm glad I went with FES though, I dig the anime cutscenes and I prefer the running around/3D models in the town/school over the visual novel type approach I hear P3P went with.

I know what you're talking about, I read up on it before deciding on FES or P3P but all indications were that it had been patched (or, rather, a patched version of the game replaced the buggy version on the store).

I do have multiple save files, just in case though. Thanks for the warning.

I've been paining myself to play Chrono Cross lately. More of a masochistic vision quest than anything else. As much of a mess this game is, the soundtrack is pretty catchy.

I've been playing a bit of Persona 3 Portable every night before bed. Just had my first full moon boss on the train. For some reason I am loving the hell out if, while previous attempts have bored the hell out of me. It's really addictive. P4G is waiting for me afterwards.

Started a new game of FF IX last night (like my tenth lol). Can't wait to see that new quest they found! Might do the card game because it's something I've never bothered with before. I guess VIII's amazing cardgame rewards spoiled me and made me never attempt IX's, which are like in-game trophies in their importance.

I just looked it up, and seems like you're right. The flickering textures in the last block of Tartarus and the save issue have apparently both been fixed. It's kind of funny though, because as far as I can tell, the patch was released not too long after I downloaded P3 last summer.

Still working on Blue Dragon.

There are some games in this genre that I really hate, and can't get beind (FF IX, IV, and VI) but I still can understand why people would love them.

This might be the very first time where I've played a game and found it so completely boring and terrible that I can't even begin to understand how someone could actually enjoy it.

The combo of annoying characters, slow battle system, generic Toriyama art and a MC that says the same fucking shit over and over again. Ugh so terrible.

I recently bought WKC II, I couldn't get into one, and while you have to play that to get to two, I figured it couldn't be half as bad as BD.

Are you playing Blue Dragon with hard mode?

Are you playing Blue Dragon with hard mode?

Nope. Didn't even know it had a hard mode. Does this at least make use of the Job System? It's not half the system that is featured in FF X-2, but it's a nice modern take on FF V's. Sadly the game is to fucking easy to even make you use the damn thing.

A buddy of mine lent me his PSP with Persona 3 Portable.

People who know me know that I like the SMT series on DS/3DS. But so far, it's good. It's DAMN good. It's not "buy a PSP good" or "buy a Vita just for P4 Golden" good, but man. It's really compelling.

There are a lot of things I don't like about the game, but the Hard Mode DLC does improve it quite a bit for the reasons you surmise; it kind of forces you jump around the classes and it really does make the battle/job system shine.

This is the only Persona I liked. Weirdly I really love P3P because they cut out alot of moving around and boring shit so it's pretty much straight story/dungeons.

Agree on it being good, but not platform purchase good.

Hmm, can you switch modes in a game that is already started? I already got to Zola, and to be brutally honest I rather eat rat poison then play these first 10 hours again. As it is every time I turn it on I hope and pray I hit the end of Disk 1 just so I can feel like I'm actually making progress towards the end.

I've also just started playing P3P on my Vita most nights, slowly getting through it. Sad that i don't really have the time for many JRPG's these days, i have a huge pile of PS1/PSP classics on Vita that I haven't even touched yet.

Ugh I know how this feels.

I bought nearly every single Square game on PSN and I just look at the list and just don't play them.

I love JRPGs, but at least for me, I find it harder and harder to devote what game time I do have to them simply because how slow most of them tend to be. That and I just don't want to drop 40 hours on a game any more. Really hope we can get some more stream lined and shorter JRPGS in the comming years.

Totori-chan right now for me then Meruru then Ni No Kuni. When Escha & Logy gets announced I'll start Ayesha.
I think I'm gonna drop everything once Xillia comes out though.

I was not aware of this issue at all, and actually just bought this game recently. Do you know if PS2 saves can be uploaded to the cloud, and if that will solve the problem?

Edit: Never mind, read the post above saying that the problem was patched

Some friends and I played through that a couple of weeks ago. So good.
Yes it's a fun game and it's very conductive to "challenge runs" like not taking any damage, killing all enemies on the map, not using orders, etc. kind of brings out the extra depth in the combat that you wouldn't notice when scout rushing.

Well, to be fair, she is a rookie school marm, and dresses were like that in The Old (JRPG) West.

Catching up on my backlog before next gen hits by playing Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean The Last Hope. It's been interesting dealing with all these old school design decisions (no fast travel, no quest log (in the case of IU at least), enormously long cutscenes). I'm so, so, so glad that fast/hub travel is now the industry standard.

Does Tactics Ogre count? I'm playing Tactics Ogre on the vita. Instantly hooked. The setting, battle system, customization, music, everything.

Still Xenoblade. Purchased at US launch, and just can't get through it. It's hard for me to find times to really dig into a game like this one, so I get in a few hours a month if I'm lucky.

Just started tales of vesperia tonight actually. Playing co op, and its taking us a while to he used to the controls lol. Been too long since we've touched symphonies I guess

Main character is annoying but I'm sure ill warm up to him? It's only been like an hour

I had to pick between Last Remnant and Xenoblade, neither of which I've played though I've owned both for a while. I decided to save Xenoblade for later given its reputation, and currently I just began the Last Remnant, I like the battle system, not sure where the story is going to end up going, though.

You will. Yuri is one of the best protagonists in any JRPG, if not the best.

P3 ... would be a good start, not too difficult and you can learn the buffs etc.. plus it is portable :D

I was in this exact situation a few months ago so I can relate !
The first SMT game that I completed was Persona 3 on the PSP. It's a great introduction to the series, I played on Normal and had no problems with the difficulty. The lack of animated cutscenes on this version is a shame but as you said portability is a big plus.

Having just finished Persona 4 Golden on the Vita, it's a great alternative to P3 and fusing is made a lot easier but I thought the story was slightly less interesting.

Not portable, but Digital Devil Saga is newbie friendly. It has the same battle system Nocturne and SMTIV have, but you play with a persistent party rather than having to worry about fusing demons. It's kind of a mix between Nocturne and FFX (and even has a skill system a bit similar to the sphere grid. Also, the games are relatively short compared to the other games, 30 hours at most if you're not trying to tackle the superbosses. You'll also get used to the skill names/demons/etc.

In contrast to the previous two posters, I really struggled to get into Persona 3 as my first SMT game. I actively hated it at first. However, I kept with it and by the end I enjoyed it, but it took a large amount of playtime to get to that point. For me anyway.

Thank you so much for your input. It will be either P3P or DDS1+2 (I am leaning towards DSS, being much closer to Nocturne system and etymology).
