What makes a well-rounded gamer?

Is it extensive knowledge of the market and the ability to discuss games?
Is it the ability to play games well?
Is it the personal game collection?
Is it something altogether unrelated?

What, to you, makes a gamer well-rounded?

Playing games well usually means that you play enough and practice, so that gamer could be well-rounded.

Even if a person has a huge game collection, it could consist of A) crap games, or B) games the person never plays, so I dont think the collection is a good form of judgement.

In-depth knowledge of the industry can only be acheived by playing games. A person can talk about Miyamoto's greatness all they want, but without ever playing any of his titles, there is no substance to the statement. So I would say a person with the ability to discuss games and give their personal opinion would be well-rounded.

I don't necessarily know what makes a gamer well rounded, but it's pretty clear that anyone who refuses to play a game because of the hardware it's on isn't well rounded. Or well adjusted. :P

A person who enjoys games regardless who made them, what platform they are on, and what country they are from.

I'd say it's someone that is willing to give any genre a chance, including niche titles; someone who can clearly point out the good and bad things about a game, not just the quality of the graphics, but the way the games concept was executed.

Somebody who can play/judge a game and decide if its worth their time without having a magazine or web site tell them before hand.

That's what i'm doing right now with Death by Degrees. Screw the bad reviews! :lol

Or isn't well funded. :P

Ones who shut the fuck up and just play the games. They don't flame people who own the "other console" on message boards. :lol

Post impressions when you feel the time is right. I won't judge since I'm buying the game regardless. It'd have to play like a real turd for me not to enjoy a beatemup, especially one with Nina within it.

I don't think there is any one set of prerequisites for being a well-rounded gamer, but I think attitude is the foundation of it all: contrary to what some appear to assume, knowledge alone doesn't make a well-rounded gamer. Elitist and fanboy attitudes (both fanboys obsessively and blindly FOR something or blindly AGAINST it) are the enemy of a well-rounded gamer.

The well-rounded gamer for me, begins with an inherently open and perceptive mind toward gaming. These gamers want to understand things, they want to see all sides, and can give credit to all viewpoints. They learn more this way, and in reality end up knowing - and more importantly, comprehending - a lot more about gaming as a whole than the seemingly expert fanboy who can rattle off sales numbers from memory.

i don't know why anyone would want to be a well-rounded anything. progress should be towards specialization.

Its a shame that someone had to say the joke so early on in the thread.

I would say someone who buys a game and tries to complete every mode, every difficulty level and unlock every secret. Someone who doesnt buy games just to make their collection look big. Someone who doesnt judge a game because of the system its on. Someone who spends a reasonable amount of time playing, by saying that i mean and hour or 2 a day, 3 or 4 on a weeked, not something like 8 hours on your weekend. Someone who not embarrasses to play a game they think they will enjoy.
