What resolution do magazines print in?

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
I'm curious.

What is the maximum resolution a magazine can print screenshots? Seems very applicable these days with advent of super-expensive, only for the elite class, HDTV consles. Can magazines come close to showing off the grafx of these games? I don't read any of 'em, but the few times I've picked up a magazine in the last generation, I've thought that they didn't do alot of games justice, Rogue Leader being one that comes to mind (which looked very pixelated and washed out in Nintendo Power).

-- extra credit: have any game comercials for hdtv games actually been broadcast in the HDTV format?

I'm quite sure that the DPI of magazines is far beyond HD resolution.
Well, true. But the going tstandard is lower, right? I mean you cna get glossy catalogues from Niemen Marcus with photo-quality print on every page... but for game mags, that quality is just for the cover page.

DPI and resolution are seperate qualities. For example, a full 1080p frame (1920x1080 pixels) printed at 300 dpi would be 6.4" x 3.6". This of course has nothing to do with the dot pitch / pixel pitch of your screen.

QFT.

I'd imagine at least 300+ dpi though for your average magazine.

Yes, and that's the reason developers make all those super high res antialiased shots of their games. It's the only way to do game's graphics justice in print, otherwise it looks too pixellated and crappy if they just provide regular 480p buffer screen or even worse, a video capture.

Ah so THAT'S how they do it. I thought they had some filter you could apply to normal screenshots.
