What Spielberg said to the LOTR cast backstage at the Oscars...

He is a detached prick, but his performance of Sam, particularly in RotK, was absolutely fantastic. Him and McKellan were the only two of the cast who I thought deserved Oscar nominations (oh and Serkis too, although his character annoyed the fuck out of me) for their performances. I got tired of the constant homo-erotic "..but Mister Frodo.." crap, but Astin really nailed some of the scenes, particularly against Shelob and before carrying Frodo up Mt Doom. A couple of the only scenes that geuinuely moved me out of the entire series.

The thing I absolutely detest about "A Beautiful Mind" is that it is one of those obviously "manufactured for the Oscars" films - mental condition, check; hidden genius, check; love interest, check; director who hasn't won an oscar yet but many people think he should have, check.

I'm just glad Denzel won best actor for Training Day for a legit bad ass motherfucker role...fuck the cliche "mentally challenged but has tons of hidden gifts and is really just like you and me!!" roles that seemingly always win the trophy.

Yeah, usually when someone has a role where they have mental issues of some sort, than achieve even with them, it usually wins. But it was good to see Denzel up there winning the award; he deserved it for Training Day.

I didn't know astin was in the goonies. :lol. Goodstuff

He was GREAT as samwise. Best hobbit imo. I really liked the scenes with him in them. Made the film humane imo.

ROTK was ruined by hackneyed ending.

Training Day has always been a smypthay Oscar to me. He should have won it for Malcom X which to me was the best performace of his life. If it weren't for the massive Spike Lee hate he would have.

I wonder if ManaByte actually read the whole book. :p

Astin DOES spend most of the book being self-imporant, but it's really more insecure introspection than anything else(no less annoying), and more than half of the time he isn't even talking about anything related to LOTR.

Oh I know, I've heard that all before. Truth is I don't care why he won. Hell, I don't care about the awards anyway. Russell's trophy the year before was a sympathy vote, and nobody gave a shit. Bottom line is that I loved Training Day, Denzel's role is one of my favourites ever, and I'm glad he won some hardware for it. And far better that he win it for that performance, then yet another sappy ass, boring as fuck "mentally stupid, but really bright!!!" role.

You can tell someone hasn't watched A Beautiful Mind. For someone that "doesn't care" about the awards, you sure act like you give a pretty big shit, Shinobi. :p

The book sounds like a stupid publicity stunt to make him some more monies... I can't believe he actually feels that way.

All non-fiction books are nowadays. Anyone with an opinion can write a book, regardless on whether it's right or wrong [see: The boatloads of biogoraphies nobody cares about, and books based on the current war]

how would you have ended it?

ended it without the samwise family bit.

+

shorten aragorn's ceremony

that's all. Ended the feature when the boats sailed and maybe cut to hobbits faces.

Because the ring is destroyed and the films dramatic tension is all removed. It was best to cut to THE END asap. IMO. What PJ did had a lot of people sitting there thinking.. when is this going to end. It was dull and ruined a great film. Leave the audience wanting more not wishing it would finish.

I agree - I couldn't believe they stretched it out another 30 minutes like that.

That's what I hated about Cold Mountain as well. You could see Miramax sitting down flicking through a bunch of novels for their Oscar candidate of the year.

Ive heard this bullshit before, and it doesnt get any less rediculous.

They strive to make the best movie they could while basing it on the life of the real life John Nash - it makes for an interesting story.

Manufactured for the oscars? Who gives a fuck.

Hey lets make a film that wont be well recieved by anyone! Score.

except.. wasnt/isnt john nash gay? ;)

man i dont know if the guys is a prick or not but in ROTK when he picked up Frodo and carried him i really wanted to break out a "RUDY RUDY" chant.

I didn't think there was anything wrong with the ending. Actually, had they stayed with the book it would have been a LOT longer.

They showed the coronation to pay off all the Aragorn/Arwen stuff and to honor the hobbits and then showed how the hobbits have a little trouble fitting back into place, then the handover of the book (very important) and then Frodo setting sail...the bit with Sam was exactly as the book ended. Since it was no longer Frodo's story, it had to end with sam

Yeah, Tolkien's own ending is actually really rubbish. But my memory is hazy here, in the books, doesn't it also say that years later, Sam also got to take a boat to happy elf land, 'cause he too had been a ring-bearer even for a short time? I guess Jackson made the boat at the end of the film the 'last' boat to up the dramatic tension.

It's the one time I ever had a rooting interest at the awards, mainly cause a bunch of brown shirts were pissed that Denzel even got nominated for Training Day. So I enjoy rubbing that victory into their red necks.

And yeah, I haven't watched BM...why waste time watching a movie I have no interest in?

People weren't complaining because he was black. They were pissed because Training Day was a mediocre movie and Denzel has had much better roles. Training Day was a make-up for not getting nominated for The Hurricane the year before.

People were overly pissed in this case, far more then they were for Russell Crowe the year before for his make-up award for Gladiator. Their reasons for their overreaction are of no concern to me...I simply lump 'em all in the same brown shirt stew for my own benefit. Not my concern if people have a problem with it.

Training Day is far from a medicore movie BTW, though that's hardly the point. Denzel is the reason the movie is worth watching. Without him, it probably does become average. That he made it a terrific movie to watch made him more then a worthy recipient of the award. So there.

Training Day was a good film. Denzel's best role, and altho it's cliche I guess was in Glory. Of course he's incredibly good in abouth anything.

On Topic: FOTR was definately the best of the trilogy... despite being the film with the least "action". It was a classic and should have won, IMO. TT, and ROTK were good action films and fun but not as good as FOTR.*

* I love them all really, but FOTR should have won awards.

Denzel winning was cool. But having seen Training Day now, I definitely think he was put forward as Best Actor in order to cash in on the feeling that he'd been overlooked before. At best he was equally the main character in the film, definitely not the main actor, with Ethan being a supporting character that the nominations presented. But they were more likely to win going the way they did.

It's the same thing the next year with Nicole Kidman and the Hours. They knew they'd be able to ride her being overlooked in her Moulin Rouge/ The Others year to an Oscar, by keeping Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore (now there's an overlooked actress) out of the category.
