what the hell happened to the two Nightmare Before Christmas games due out this fall?

A lot of people hated, but I wasn't that horribly offended by it. It was my love for NBC, no doubt.

edit: Looks like the PS2 title came out in Japan over a month ago, and for some odd reason the domestic release is in Feb, according to Gamespot.

Seems like a DMC clone with a NBC spin, which doesn't sound all that bad because I love that old Tim Burton film. Although, I am not a fan of movie games.

According to Japanese publications, the game faired relatively well.

Seems to be worthy fan service.

Considering how nuts Japanese people in general seem to be about NBC, those numbers probably have about 25% goodwill factored in. Considering how old the (great) movie is, I'm constantly amazed at all the new NBC stuff that's Japan-only, and it's snapped up with reckless abandon.

I hope they fixed it a LOT since the time around E3, because I was all over that game expecting great things, and was pretty disappointed. Last I heard, the game was March '05 for US. Did they move it up?

I got my hands on the import and have played it for a couple of hours. Great environments, but the action was fairly repetative early in the game and there's quite a bit of loading. I'll give it a try off the hard drive in the next few days and let you know if that helps out much. Looks like they got the key voice actor (EN voices on the JP version, they got the official Jack voice actor, same as KH) and the production quality is high overall. So far my feeling is that it's almost too much like the movie (which is strange coming from someone who's watched it 30+ times), bordering on the 'cash in' feeling. Some odd choices (like looping the actual game music, with lyrics, and boss battles being bizzare rhythm-game hybrids) are likely what depresses the scores we've seen. Overall, it's been good so far, but definately not great. I'd recommend you stay away unless you're a huge fan of the IP - it's quite amazing to see the world come alive and be able to walk around in it as Jack. However, as an action game there's tons of better stuff out right now.

Oh, and sadly, the semi-striped style of the 'carved' floor and wall textures in Halloween town really suffer from the system's lack of high-end texture filtering, and overall the game has a very aliased look.
