SonicMegaDrive said:Mario 3 came out Feburary 12th, 1990 in the US, as I recall.
For me, Mega Man 2 was the 1989 game of the year.
Revenge of Shinobi, Phantasy Star 2, The Guardian Legend, Duck Tales, The Adventures of Lolo, Ninja Gaiden, Strider, Tetris, the TMNT coin-up and Ghouls and Ghosts are all excellent candidates.

And maybe my memory is off, but I remember buying Phantasy Star II right before Christmas in 1989. I remember because it was like, my third game for the system that year.

Too bad I'd already had DW for months... As I recall, that promo started well after the game came out.soundwave05 said:Anyone remember Nintendo's promotion where if you subscribed to Nintendo Power, you got Dragon Warrior for free? That was crazy back in the day.
Also I think Mega Man 2 has the best music of any 8-bit game.
B E N K E said:Wonderboy III: Dragon's Trap. Was it released in 1989?
Shinobi said:Yeah, I think Wonder Boy III was released in '89. I still need to play this game...I absolutely loved Wonder Boy in Monster Land on the Master System.
My favourite games from 1989 are pretty easy...Test Drive 2 almost melted my Amiga from hours of use, and Vette provided similiar thrills when I got a PC a few years later. For console, Revenge of Shinobi wins by a country mile...still one of the greatest platformers I've ever played. And for arcade, how could it be anything else but TMNT? Just a bad ass game. For reference, here are some of the notable arcade releases from '89.
Final Fight
Golden Axe
Gradius 3
Klax
Line of Fire
R-Type II
Race Drivin'
Shadow Dancer
Special Criminal Investigation
Strider
Super Monaco GP
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Turbo OutRun
