What was the best racer on NES and SNES?

I'm talking strictly car-based racers; furturistic like F-Zero or a bit loopy like Mario Kart is ok. I've played quite a few of them but a lot of them escape my mind. Though that's ok, because if I don't remember them today, that probably meant they sucked.

Here goes my votes...

NES - R.C. Proam (Made by RARE?)
SNES - Top Gear (Nothing beats Top Gear!)

NES: RC Pro-Am (Honorable mentions: Super Sprint, Super Off Road)
SNES: Rock'n'Roll Racing (Honorable mentions: Mario Kart, Uniracers, F-Zero)

I didn't know there was an R.C. Proam 2. I'll have to look it up. I had a gameboy version of R.C. Proam that was pretty fun to play when I could make out the screen. :)

NES - R.C. Pro Am... and Rad Racer for those god awful crashes.

SNES - Super Mario Kart, with Fzero in a distant second.

NES: RC Pro Am (this series really needs to be revisted by Rare--if they still have the property)... honorable mention goes out ot Rad Racer as it was the first racer I ever played on a console--Pole Position in the arcades doesn't count

SNES: Hmm, not sure, I wasn't into racers much during the SNES era. It action games and sports then.

Ironically enough I don't like racing games much at all now and I usually don't buy sports games either (even though I'm a big sports fan). It's all about RPGs and adventure games for me now.

There was also a RC Pro AM: Championship Edition (or some shit like that) on the Sega Genesis as well, developed by Rare..

But yeah, RC Pro AM ROCKED the house, Super Mario Kart was great, Stunt Race FX was pretty fun as well.. but seriously though, this wasn't a great time for racers. N64 had WaveRace 64 and Mario Kart 64 which was enough to demolish the above games for me. :) Plus add in Beetle Adventure Racing, F-Zero X, Diddy Kong Racing, the Need for Speed games, Gran Turismo 1-2, etc. and that generation is where racing really took off, I believe! :D

Wow, the NES really didn't have many great racing games. :lol

True, though I remember playing a lot of Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing back in the day, and enjoying it immensely... I cringe at the thought of what I'd think of it in the post-16-bit era, though.

EDIT: D'oh! Misread that as 'the SNES really didn't have many great racing games'. My bad!

I liked Top Gear 2 but I was never a bug Mario Kart fan so.

On the NES Rad Racer was the most played among my circle.

All this Top Gear lovin' makes me smile. Avoid Top Gear 2, though. They tried to make it more sim-like and took it off rails - just too ambitious for SNES, IMO.

I think others have mentioned most of my faves, but oh well:

SNES: Top Gear. Super Off Road (better than the NES version). Nigel Mansel's Racing (forget the exact title. decent Indy racing). Super Mario Kart (duh).
NES: Super Sprint. RC Pro AM. Rad Racer. Micro Machines.

Top Gear is a great choice for SNES. I loved the little speech bubbles that popped up by your car when you used a nitro or passed someone. :lol

Mario Kart isn't really a racing game so I don't think it counts. ;)

That said, I'd go with RC Pro Am and F-Zero respectively.
