What Will Happen To Xbox Live once Xenon comes out?

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
I dont know if this has been discussed but i think its as worthy issue to wonder about.

What's gonna happen to xbox live when the new machine comes out? Will they just leave it open for us to play our old games on our old xbox(assuming it dosent have backwards compatability)? I mean they have plenty of money to keep it open, but what will they actually do?

Also does anyone here know what the new online service for Xenon will be like? What will it be called? Xbox Live Next? Xenon Live? Do you think there will be new features that will blow away what Live currently has to offer?

Speculate away :)

I'm guessing they'll keep the Xbox Live name since it's an established name brand. Maybe if you subscribe you'll be able to play games for both systems?

xBox Live is essentially a mix and match service.

Game A will always match players up with players of Game A, I don't see any compatibiliy problems there.

well it provides update service too, but I don't see how that could create any problem.

That is a question I am personally waiting for. After the death of SegaNET and my backlog of games, I want some kind of assurance I can still play online-centric games, the way they were meant to be played, years after they came out.

Xbox Live on Xenon should (and I'm totally sure it will) be compatible with the current one, just with a lot more new features. You will be able to keep your account (I guess an account recovery will have to be done, that's it) and your friends list.
And since it will be an evolution of the current one, they will be able to keep the Xbox 1 live running for a long time with no problem.

In Belgium there is some sort of "Halo 2 Hero" contest going on at this moment, and one of the prices is a free subscription for Xbox Live of 3 years, so that seems to back up what Blimblim says, why give a 3y subscription if the service won't continue on the next gen, which is expected to launch within 1 of 2 years max here in Europe ...

As someone already mentioned, Xbox live is just a matchmaking service, i dont think MS will be in a hurry to shut off the Xbox support when Xenon comes out, as long as people are paying their subscriptions i doubt MS will care what system they are on.

Xbox Live is a service virtually independent by the platforms that use it. This means that Xbox Live will continue to exist, enhanced for Xenon's needs, and it wil support both Xbox and Xenon. And Microsoft already stated that it will be made usable by PC players too, as a part of their XNA strategy.

One thing is for sure. Xbox 2 games will be online from day one. MS are probably hard at work changing the infrustructure to make way for greater functionaility. Cant wait to see the next evolution of Live!

From comments I've read in the past by 'those in the know' it is supposed to be a snap to transfer your Xbox Live! account to Xbox 2 (Xenon). I hope so. My account goes into January 2006 right now and I want to be playing Xbox 2 games online come November.

I don't see any reason why Xbox Live! could not coexist between Xbox and Xbox 2.

The one problem I worry about is game saves is Xbox 2 is backwards compatible. Some games force you to save to the Xbox HDD (Ninja Gaiden) and you can't transfer the files to a memory card. Will there be some sort of software to come out that lets you transfer your save files over from Xbox to Xbox 2? I put in a ton of time getting all those scarabs and unlocking the original trilogy. I can do it again but I'd rather just play the game and not put in all that time again to unlock those extras.

knowing MS, they'll boot all of the X1 players off of XBL to force everyone to buy an X2 to play Halo2.5

I would hope that's not the case. It really doesn't make any sense either.

what specifically makes you think that?

I'm sure XBL will still be up when Xenon launches, and you'll still be able to play your old Xbox games if you wish. Have they even discontinued service for any XBL game yet? Maybe it'll happen in the future but I don't think too soon. I'm sure the jump to Xenon for your XBL gamertag will be painless.

EA is shutting down Madden 2005 service in August.

Are you serious? If so, -1 MS and -1000 EA. So much for my plan to pick up Madden 2006 on the cheap a few months late to play online.

I don't have the Xbox Madden 2005 anymore, but I remember the small print being the same as on the PS2 one where it says the service will be shut down.

Happens every year on the ps2, been like this since since 2003.

Isamu, That would be like saying 'HAY GUYS DO YOU THINK THEY WILL RELEASE A NEW INTARWEB WITH THE NEXT VERSION OF WINDOWS?!?!?"

JoDark is Playing Perfect Dark Zero (Xbox 2 real name here)

That's what you will see sometime next fall... and you will see it on your Xbox 1 Live account even though I will be playing on Xenon.

MS is pretty damn smart. When Halo shipped... my friends list was suddenly VERY active, with everyone playing Halo 2. What a killer bit of free advertising! Of course they want this to happen across systems. Cross system invites! Live functioning on both systems... you are paying for a Live account, of course it will work on both.

Live rules, MS seems to know this, it will be a perfectly smooth, and virtually automatic transition/co-exhistance imo.

Bring it!

I recall part of the pitch for the design of XBox Live was that Xenon games will be compatible right out of the gate with all of the services and features; this was also part of the XNA push earlier this year. I take games like PD0 and some racing and sports games will support it from day 1.

If there is a Xenon HD edition with backwards compatibility I better be able to play Xbox games on it out of the box.
