It's been a while since I've been motivated to listen to some newish music.

Shitty cover art and several poor reviews but I still like. Fantino can be found on the Lost in Translation soundtrack so if you liked that you might want to give this a listen.

Gustav - Rettet die Wale
Thanks to Mario_Hugo for bringing this to my attention. Swooning over female vocalists is going to get me in trouble some day.

God I hate the Kaiser Chiefs song! Especially the chorus, sounds like a poor ripoff of the Ramones.

I'm listening to the Digital Devil Saga OST now.:)

The Books, Lost & Safe

Maaah-velous! The Lemon of Pink was a bit of a step down, IMO, so it's great that they've come back strong. Possibly their best work yet, in fact, despite what Pitchfork might think... The new focus on vocals is different, but it works so so well here. I've found myself on more than a few occasions being so emotionally affected by the music that it truly catches me off guard. My thoughts had been wavering on heading downstate to hit their concert at the end of the month, but I'm going to do everything in my power to go now.

These Animal Men, (Come On Join) the High Soceity

Nothing fantastic here, just a pretty fun, catchy bunch of Brit new wave/punk-ish tunes. Certainly fine for the $1.50 I paid.

Black Box: WaxTrax! Records: the First 13 Years

Coil, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Revolting Cocks, KMFDM, etc... This is an amazing collection of music, and a fine intro to a genre that I'm just getting into.

A co-worker burned me these three discs, but I'd love to get the original set after seeing the incredible packaging (a black metal box wrapped in mesh, with a slick booklet, artwork, even a veritable rat's nest of unspooled demo tape that can apparently be played if you're up for putting it all back together).

It's not as solid as Make Up the Breakdown, but the lesser songs are starting to get catchier and the good ones remain as catchy. It has its lowpoints, but it's a solid little album.

BSP jettisons the noise and punk for sweet melody and melancholy. I like it. At first all the songs kinda sound the same, but the more you listen, the more you realize this disc has soul.

Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
My album of the year so far. Beautiful instrumentation. Brilliant lyrics. And they even bring out the electric guitar for a few songs this time around. Consistently amazing and addictive.

g73048o1vke.jpg

I love Jason Molina, but this album seems...slight somehow. It's still haunting and gorgeous, of course, but something seems to be missing.

g73120ligot.jpg

I agree with everything Hotarubi said. It's a feast of acoustic guitar, violin, sound effects, and spoken word sound samples. "An Animated Description of Mr. Maps" is dizzyingly inventive. But it's its heart that sticks with you.

Mahjongg - Raydoncong 2005
Dance-punk with an afrobeat twist. Like LCD Soundsystem with weird time signatures and more noise. Okay, so it's really nothing like LCD.

Sheer brilliance throughout, my favorite song is The Bagman's Gambit.

B0007US8ES.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

This album isn't nearly as bad as Pitchfork and others make it out to be. Sure it's not as good as Make Up the Breakdown, but it has its moments.

B00082IJ08.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Just started listening to it, might take a while to grow (although I love Feel Good Inc. and Dirty Harry).

AWESOME power pop album.

B0007R8F58.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I was originally put off by this album's simplicity, but I can't get enough now.

B0007KIFLO.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Really fun album, I wonder how it will do in the States.

Ugh I can't stand the new Books. Lemon of Pink is no way a step-down, it is a STEP-UP. this new album...has gotten TOO pretentious.

With that said, currently listening to:
M83 - Dead Cities...
Six Organs of Admittance - the flower album
R. Kelly - Trapped in the Closet/Sex in the Kitchen (Remix)
Ben Folds - Songs for Silverman
Common - Be
New Order - Waiting for the Sirens' Call
Elliott Smith - String Quartet Tribute to Elliott Smith
GONTITI - THE MOST COMFORTABLE MUSIC IN THE WORLD. RESPECT.

I like happy Beck, and by the way, the title should be spelled "Güero", this was a random fact of the day.

The first album I've bought this year with a 2005 release date. Picked it up on a whim ($11.99) and I really like it:

The new Okkervil River record is fucking brilliant. Probably my AOTY so far, as well... every time I listen to it it gets even better and better. I saw them on Saturday night (their last show with Decemberists) and they put on a devastating set. I'd heard lots of negative things about this tour, which was weird-- I saw them last year with John Vanderslice and they were really good then. They played an even more killer set this time. I mean, they pretty much opened the set with "Westfall" and "For Real." My pants were thoroughly soiled.

Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
British Sea Power - Open Season
Amanda Woodward - La Decadence de la Decadence
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (after being urged by a friend to listen to it again, I like it a lot better than I remember, not as good as the hype says, but good)
Patrick Wolf - Wind in the Wires
Gibby Haynes + His Problem - Gibby Haynes + His Problem
The Feelers - Learn to Hate the Feelers

There isn't enough hype for Black Sheep Boy.

Man, I swear, if Pitchfork pans this record and people end up not buying it --- I'm going to suck their editors' blood.
