What's a heroin high like?

I ask because a friend's brother ODed and died from heroin today, and it has me wondering. Is it a high where the person is functional, or do you like pass out from it?

don't even think about it or I'm telling Nikki.

but to answer your question I dunno - the whole needle thing would freak me out.

I have no experience with it (never will) but I would think you just pass out. I would think he went out with a Euphoric feeling

Sorry to hear about that though. What a dumb way to go :(

I was wondering this myself.

According to Pulp Fiction, you can't snort it, and you can still drive a car while on it. Methinks both these are incorrect portrayals.

You can snort it if that's a problem. Just sayin'

I'm not thinking about doing it. What are you, insane?

I just have no idea what they're supposed to even be like. Any time I've seen it in movies, it always seems like as soon as the person shoots up they pass out.

It wouldn't be so popular if you just passed out.

It's hard to describe but 'intense euphoria' is a close approximation. I've never done heroin, but I have tried several prescription opiates, and they're all pretty similar. In my experience, if you pass out you took way too much. I've always maintained a sense of self and relatively high function (considering) with opiates, although I would never attempt to, say, drive a car.

If you ever have to stay in a hospital after surgery, or a car accident or whatever, you'll get a little taste. Morphine, heroin, fentanyl, dilaudid...they're all the same drug, basically.

My condolences, by the way.

My childhood friend who I haven't seen in a good 7 years came back to Massachussetts recently (a visit) and he alluded to why he came back then finally told me why (he was into heroin bad). The scary shit is that he was still talking about it like its the best thing ever and didn't see anything wrong with how its fucked him up. It scared the shit out of me.

Its almost like he knew that the shit was poison but another part of him was telling him it was ok and that just came out of him in regular conversations about it. I didn't like that at all (almost like the drug itself had its hands on him, controlling him still. Obvious addiction).

I didn't see him again for the remaining time he was up here and I feel like shit for doing that.

heroine is the cleanest drug. Prolonged use has close to no physical side effects on the body and internal organs. The addiction and overdosing are the real problem

When Travolta was preparing for his role in Pulp Fiction, Tarantino told him to get smashed on tequila and then float in the middle of a very warm hot tub, and that would give him a good approximation of what it feels like to be high on heroin. No idea if that's accurate or not.

And sorry to hear about your friend's brother :(

In the early 1900's... man I bet everyone was fucked up. You had coke in actual coke. :P

I personally dont know... but I've had patients who are in the hospital from drug abuse.. and they are absolute BITCHES to take care of. They are agitated, combative, pulling out their IV lines-- All I can really do is dope them up with Ativan to calm their ass down while they withdraw-- and make sure they have a CO so they dont end up hurting themselves. WORST people to get.

You guys are not exactly convincing me to never try it.

well, why not? I mean, other than the debilitating addiction, withering away, and death. What have you got to lose?

Also, this topic reminds me of some radio commercials I've been hearing a lot recently. They start almost exactly like the old, stupid weed commercials (person telling story about how "it" ruined their life, monotone voiceover saying that "it" ruins everything), then it just hits you with "heroin addiction". Are they applying the old "weed is bad" commercials and just replacing "weed" with heroin now? I find the whole thing kind of humorous. I mean, if you're already using / considering heroin ... I dunno. I don't think a cheap government commercial is going to sway you.

Something tells me that THC pills would be even cleaner.

Still waiting for a real user to chime in.... There's gotta be a few on GAF.

I tried a few capsules of methadone once -- didn't do much besides a slight buzz & feelin sluggish.

This film pretty much swayed me away from ever trying heroin.

I don't know, if I ever walked in on a room with a Pre-Skinny Jenniffer Conelly speeding on an Eightball I might just join in :drool

Yeeeaahhhh. My 6'2", 100lb., toothless cousin with a face that looks like a catcher's mitt begs to differ.

The needle thing is the biggest hurdle.

Although, there is very little pain or discomfort - the actual act of sticking something into your arm has a very bad stigma.

You draw some blood up into the syringe to make sure that you hit the vein, then slowly plunge the liquid into your bloodstream.

As soon as you start pushing that plunger, you can feel it taking effect.

Imagine a fuzzy fireworks show going off in your head. Sometimes you can 'taste' it in the back of your mouth - a foul, bitter taste.

If the stuff is good, you don't remember taking the needle out of your arm. Often you don't take it out at all - you wake up later with it hanging there.

Despite the Hollywood glamorization - it is far from glamorous.

If you get an average hit - you feel very nauseous and often will throw up. You go 'on the nod' which is a state where you are barely conscious.

You can have visual and auditory hallucinations. The best experience I had was a euphoric high where sounds took on an angelic quality. A car horn outside my house sounded like a choir - that kind of thing...

But overall, my experiences were negative. More often than not, I just felt really sick and kind of grumpy. Your face gets really itchy and your skin breaks out in acne after using it for a while.

Overall? Not recommended. The best part is the 'rush' when you actually inject it - and you wonder if this time you can get that 'high' that you have been chasing since your first try.

A lot of former addicts that I have spoken too said that this is the part that they miss the most - that random chance of 'catching the dragon' maaaaaan.

I was part of the indie music scene in my city in the mid to late 90s and it was very common then. Haven't tried it again or been interested for almost 10 years now.

Like somebody else said - stick to the weed if you simply have to destroy your brain.

Heroin's great, not very addictive and a rather safe drug. Only reason not to do it is because it's expensive and you don't like needles. Then again you could snort it.

Have you ever met a user of any drug who didn't say shit like that?

The only addicts I've ever met were on smokes and booze and were totally cognizant of their addiction.

If you've ever taken a prescription painkiller like oxycontin or percs it's like several of those. Or hundreds of warm blankets smothering you; very complacent feeling, incredibly strong physical buzz. It can be snorted in very small quantities and it often induces nausea. Purportedly very addictive.

What the fuck? Bullshit. Only nicotine, meth, and crack are more addictive.

I was going to say the same thing, but people have a way of turning things on you so I didn't.

Take it from someone who had a brother that was on this shit. Let me emphasise the word "had", as in, he's dead now.

Seriously, don't do it. I watched my brother go from a happy, loving guy into an angry theif and liar. Don't make that mistake, he made me promise I never would.

Yup. And they're a pain in the ass to get clear CT scans on as well, since they can't/won't hold still. (Duct tape can only do so much to limit the motion.)

That, and you can count on the ones who aren't catheterized to reliably end-up soaking themselves in piss. Sometimes while on the exam table.. grr..

I'll chip in here, as I've done it a few times. pubba said it best, except I've never shot it up, I've only snorted it. The actual feeling is like laying in the most perfect field in the most perfect weather and the sun is just oh so lovely and warm today hey look a squirrel oh my leg itches now my face itches now my chest itches my everything itches i want to go to sleep i can't sleep i'm just so oh god i'm itchy but the scratchy feels so good i'm gonna not stand up i get nauseus when i do

and then you either pass out or sober up and get kind of uncomfortable and get this little nag in the back of your mind that tells you that you want more.

It's not my thing, really.

Heroin is just a Morphine prodrug, so if you've ever had morphine, its about the same, only because of some quirks of metabolism, Heroin is metabolized faster and more effectively than morphine, so it's effects are stronger.

Why anyone would be stupid enough to take heroin even once is beyond me.

I did it for the sheer want to experience it. You do not get addicted after your first hit and I just like to experience as many things as I can that pertain to the human body and what natural compounds can do to you, physically and mentally. Curiosity killed the cat, yeah yeah, but heroin is ridiculously overblown.

I remember watching Inside the Actors Studio with John Travolta, and he said that a friend of his helped him take a peek at what a heroin high was like. The friend told him to get drunk off his ass with Tequila and float in a pool in the middle of the day.

I've never actually done it though, and never will.
Just my 2 cents.
