I've some vid files(probably mpeg2) that are taking some space and I was wondering what's the best free and easy way to turn these into a smaller but highquality vid?

The best quality MPEG4 encoder IMO is AutoGK (free program to boot) to XViD format. It takes a long long time to transcode, but it's well worth it.
The quickest MPEG4 transcoder I used so far is (don't laugh) Windows Movie Maker 2.x to Windows Media Video, largely because it just does a single pass (where as AutoGK will do a mandatory 2 passes). Also a free program if you use WinXP. The resulting quality is great too (not quite as good as AutoGK with 2 passes, but still quite good), as long as you are lucky enough to avoid audio sync problems on long files (over 30 minute).
