A cheaper alternative to the $300 (US) 20gig iPod to be exact.

It seems that my goal of getting an iPod to play in my car might cost like 100 bucks (through a hardwire fm modulator)

Any help?

Are you sure you don't have an Auxilary input for your CD stereo?
Check the manual if you are not sure..

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
I own a Nomad Zen Xtra, and initially I purchased a Belkin FM transmitter to use it in my car. It was like listening to an old cassete with Dolby noise reduction off. More hiss than music. Later, when I updated my car's audio system, I just ran a connection from the RCA aux inputs on the back of my in-deck to a mini-headphone wire that sits between my console. Whenever I want to listen to some music on my Nomad, I just hook it up to that physical connection. Such an option, when possible, will always sound better than the wireless alternatives out there. Like one of the previous posts mentioned, check to see if you car's audio player has an aux input - it's likely the best-sounding option.
