What's this accelerator crap do, anyway?

Alright, let's get this outta the way: yeah, I'm on 56k dial-up. Temporary cost-saving measure.

Today I've been cleaning up my computer, backing up files, deleting old and unused programs, updating software, patching, etc etc. While I was doing this, it hit me that I never bothered to update after switching back to 56k from DSL, and I decided to download this Accelerator stuff that Bellsouth offers. But before I run this program, I gotta know...

What in the hell does it really do? Should I even bother? And, are they gonna spy on me with this or anything? The website doesn't really tell you sh*t, and I'm not computer savvy enough to figure these things out on my own. So I'd appreciate a little advice.

Thanks in advance. :)

Doesn't this just save files into a cache so that the next time you load the page, rather than having to DL the image files all over again, you'd have them stored locally on your drive? It's a pain in the ass, really.

Thanks for the input, guys, I guess I'll skip it.

Now, where can I find some cool new desktop icons that work with Windows 98 SE? Thought I'd spruce things up a bit while I'm at it.

My understanding of it is that your ISP saves copies of popular websites on their servers, so when you access them you'll always get the fastest possible speed. It's almost completely worthless.

Think you're thinking of a web browser's cache there. But yeah, most of those 'accelerators' are fairly worthless - either they wind up compressing already compressed graphics even more and save basically very little time or save you no time at all. It's dialup. It sucks. And this is why I do my downloadin' at work.

They all work the same.

And how they work is that when you access a website, the ISP loads it and lowers the quality of the PICTURES and you then download only the low quality version of those pictures. You can change the quality you want, or force 'normal' quality.

Has no effect on files or anything other than images.
