What's with radio censors these days?

I don't get it. In "1, 2 Step," you can say 'retarded' but in "Let's Get It Started (Retarded)," you can't.

In "Shake Ya Tailfeather," you can say 'shit,' 'ass,' booty,' and 'fuck,' but there are dozens of songs that censor those words (in the new Nivea song "Okay," the words 'booty' and 'naked' are censored).

'Bitch' is allowed in "Without Me" but censored in many other songs.

I don't get it. How is it decided what words to censor in songs?

(I remember at one point, Jennifer Lopez was allowed to say 'nigga' in "I'm Real" on my local radio station (KISS FM) until the radio station received a hailstorm of complaints.)

It all depends on the market and how comfortable the station is with playing the material. I work for a major radio company, and we have many versions of the same song for this exact reason.

In a related issue, on MTV (at the end of the "Sugar" video with Trick Daddy & Lil Kim), they say, plain as day, "Lick, lick, lick, lick on the click." :lol And on BET, in the "OK" song with Nivea and the Youngbloodz, in the lyric, "Yo hands up on my booty/2-steppin in my coochie/They like 'go go' (repeat 2x)/You like the way I shake it/You want to see me naked...." they CENSOR 'booty' and 'naked' but let her say 'coochie' :lol

You know "Cheddar," on KISS FM? I know that guy. Suck it down!

Never heard of him. Off hand, I can only remember Kasper and Valentine.

Nonetheless, get me some free tickets to something! :)

I've always found it funny how a number of rock songs that have the F or S bomb dropped once or twice are able to stay in, yet some rap or R&B tracks get "ass" scrubbed out. It all seems pretty arbritary. Of course a lot of that is also the labels censoring themselves by giving the radio outlets clean versions to play, something that I assume wasn't done back in the day.

Well, I felt stupid too, especially when I found out that he recorded his show in the afternoon the day before. He's not even live in the morning....how's that for some shit? We would record his show at 4 in the afternoon, then re-broadcast it the next morning.
