What's with the Mario 64 DS multiplayer mode?

I always have to download the game to play it even when both persons have the game? That download takes like 5 minutes. I think it's downloading all 4 levels and characters at once or something. And if any little thing goes wrong you have to start it over. I tried it out today with this guy in my class and 2 times the download stopped because he accidentally hit B and one time the download failed for some unexplained reason right when the game was about to start. What the hell was Nintendo thinking? Metroid Prime Hunters' multiplayer is quick and easy to set up. Why couldn't they do the same for Mario?

Nintendo was thinking that it'd be really awesome if other DS owners didn't have to own Mario 64 DS to enjoy the multiplayer?

Well, maybe they should have thought that it would be really awesome if it wasn't a pain in the ass for people with multiple copies of the game.

Yeah, this bothered me too. If both my friend and I have the game we shouldn't have to use the download play. It should work with multiple or single cards.

The multiplayer in Mario 64 DS was probably an afterthought or a last minute project since it seems so rushed. Fortunately, though it's gimped, it's completely functional and works with only one cart.

Multiplayer minigames or co-op semi-adventure mode (I'm thinking like the main game but limited in scope) would have been amazing. :(

Afterthought? It was the only part of the game even at E3. It's been planned since they started working on the game.

For one, perhaps just a race to the top of Bomb-Omb Mountain, Koopa Race style.

I knew multiplayer was always a part of the game but the actual implementation of it seems to be extremely rushed. It doesn't seem like they were working on it since the beginning of the port since it's so highly limited. Hell it doesn't even recognize if your system already has the game so it doesn't have to upload it. If that doesn't scream rushed I don't know what does.

That or they had this giant plan all laid out and realized they didn't have enough time to implement it so they just did the fastest thing they could instead.

I'm not complaining about the multiplayer, I think it's a fun addon and very cool to play with a few pals. It's just a bit sad because I thought that multiplayer was going to have a much heavier focus with much more variety.

I have feeling Nintendo are going to mess up on wireless

Man...you're running on autopilot with that little tidbit today.

I think it was likely a matter of Nintendo deciding to streamline development of the title, and simply use the single player multiplayer at all times.

I got to play 4 player Mario at EB today when I went to pick up Mario Party 6 and preorder a PSP. Its fun but seems sort of limited... like the games don't last long enough or something. I was surprised you couldn't pick your character before the game started as well.
