What's wrong with this video card?

The OEM has something to do with it, but that wouldn't knock off $150. I'd bet Newegg gets good deals from Sapphire, seeing as I got a Sapphire 9800 Pro from them for the same price as a 9800 elsewhere.

'Course, I wouldn't buy that card, after my Sapphire 9800 Pro couldn't handle it's own heat... have I mentioned this before?

What happened? I have a Sapphire 9800 Pro!!!

I also have a Sapphire 9800 Pro.

Works great, but it's a tad slower than built by Ati. I get 5600-5700 on 3Dmark2003 while people with Ati said they get about 6300. I've been told that Sapphire buys parts from Ati that they test and deem too slow (but no slower than about 5% below their standard).

The reason why I'm looking at new cards is because I just built a new system (aside from video) about 2 months ago, and sadly the 9800 pro is holding it back on the newest games.

Long story short, again.

Apparently, the 9800 Pros are clocked so high that they cannot safely run under a full load. This did not become apparent to many people until Doom3 came out and many, many, many 9800 Pro users were getting artifacts while playing it and in my case, additional crashes. Carmack warned us ahead of time the Doom3 would fuck with OC'd systems, but as I did not OC, I didn't worry.

My 98 had been giving me intermitant problems all year, but I never caught on. Then Doom3 pretty much killed it. After a few nights of Doom3, I had to under clock my card just so Windows would not artifact. The card was just clocked too high for it's own good and it took damage.

To anyone who plays the heat card on this one, please note that the 9800 was replaced with a 6800GT and my P4 2.6 became a 3.4 in the last two weeks. My system does run hotter now, but it does not artifact or crash. The problem was heat, but that the 9800 Pro couldn't handle its own heat.

So you can see why I wouldn't trust a super fast Sapphire ATI card right now.

Never heard of this problem before today. I have a 9800 Pro which was running on my main system Athlon 64 3000+/Giga-Byte K8NNXP/768mb Mushkin PC3500 DDR Level II/Audigy 2. Played tons of Doom III during this hot as hell southern california summer and my card never showed any signs of artifacting. It has since been replaced with a x800 Pro and my 9800 Pro was sent down to my 2nd rig. :)

Well the only 'artifacts' I have noticed are occasional black lines (no thicker than a scanline) in a Windows environment sometimes. It's not that often though and barely noticable. They don't stretch across the whole screen, only towards the middle/upper left. EVERY time I apply changes (FSAA settings, etc.) it does it too.

LOL, i passed on that card because the heatsink looked like it had a smaller base than the one i got. Luckily for me both version were available back when i purchased my 9800 Pro.

I really enjoy those pics and also learning of the 9800 can't handle it's own heat.

If I wearn't on my way to the gym I'd make one that says, "I'm applying for financial aid so I can spend it on an X800 All In Wonder."
