Where did it Go Wrong with KFC?

It's stupid expensive. Just an 8pc of chicken is $19. I can go to the deli in a grocery store and get an 8pc for $7, and it wont be overcooked either. These fast food places here in the USA do not pay their employees well so they put in little effort and just dont care which is why it's horrible everywhere. One exception is Panda Express, they pay their employees really well and I never had a bad experience.

Say what you want about KFC now their tenders are good. I get the $5 2 pc chicken combo (Includes 2 pieces of fried chicken with a side, biscuit and a drink. Choose Variety (breast & wing) or Drum & Thigh Combo.)

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Still amazing in Japan. In fact, when I went there in Japan the first time, my first thought was "this is what KFC used to taste like in the 80s and 90s in the US".

I blame the weird chemicals they've been putting in everything. Here in the US, it's a race to the bottom, and the idea is to charge as much as possible for something as cheaply made as possible. Quality barely plays into this equation.

Only tried kfc in sicily and amsterdam and it was pretty shit, no idea how it is so famous, but then again, mcdonals is trash and super lucrative aswell...

Popeyes is so much better. Throw in the red beans and rice and seasoned fries it's no contest. I'd take Popeyes over Jesus chicken too. It's vastly overrated and even if it were that good which it's not I won't wait in those long lines.
Dude stopped making bread from rocks and wine from blood to fry some chicken?

KFC in the uk is pretty good too

A lot less processed than the US counterpart and the chicken is of much higher quality.

Lets be honest though, all those high heat fried seed oils is bad for us, you can make it taste just as good at home with an air fryer and some spice mix.

Chic-fil-a is a chicken restaurant chain in America that is highly homophobic and doesn't operate on Sundays that's why it's called Jesus Chicken™ and the drive thru lanes are always really long for a chicken sandwich that's just good not amazing.

Slim Chickens is better if you must have some fried chicken. Korean BBQ sauce.

Only good thing KFC ever had was the biscuits. Walking in the restaurant was always gross as you could feel the grease on the floor out in the lobby. It was in air. It was on everything. No one wants to go anywhere with "fried" in the name, so they have to abbreviate it. No one likes the obnoxious old looking logo and stripes. No one likes the stupid mascot.

The only American fast food that isn't trash in Spain is Burger King, which is surprisingly good and tastes like real food. On the other hand, KFC feels completely artificial and we have local options with actual chicken and fries. Young people go there because it's a meeting place just like Starbucks.

Very few modern corporations consider a quality product to be a priority.

Once it isn’t feasible to “expand” a brand anymore (you can truly only open so many locations) it turns into a race to the bottom for quality vs profit. Cheaper and cheaper goods are used to make the product whose price they raise.

Main draw was always the distinct spice mix.

Good playlist/series trying to work it out if you wanna make it yourself (think there's 10 main episodes):

I always try to remember why I once liked it so much. Had a big drop off here or I am just slave to my nostalgia. Maybe I just love fried chicken.
Have been always a bit disappointed when I got it the last few times, now I am either going for Korean fried chicken shops or I do my own.

edit: oh and they took the spicy option off the menu, now its only original recipe

Had the same question with my coworker today about hooters. He told me they were all closing. I hadn't been to one in 15 years but he was saying the food got really bad

Who expects a place like this to make good fried chicken? Or tacos. Or pizza?

w57BjBa.jpeg

KFC, like Pizza Hutt and ESPECIALLY Taco Bell (I've worked one) were ALWAYS trash tier places, but they were often the ONLY real option, at least where I grew up.

But now, decades later, the choices for all three of these food style (if you can even call the stuff Taco Bell serves a 'style') have innumerable far superior options, both franchises and actual real locally owned and operated joints.

If I had to go get franchise fried chicken, it's Bojangles as #1, then Popeyes, then maybe churches. But really, I'd just get chick-fil-la and call it a day. Zaxby's if desperate.

Wouldn't step into a Pizza Hutt or Taco Bell even to rob the place. Where I live I'm blessed with an abundance of taco type places and now there are so many pizza joints its ridiculous.
A three in one restaurant sounds horrible as a concept. Never liked these combination restaurants, in my area it was distinctly Long John Silvers with some other restaurant and the drop in quality is noticeable.

It's worse now, with "dark kitchens" that just thaw any variety of foods (you only HOPE they are actually cooking this stuff onsite) and sell them all for delivery only. You think there is some new Greek place and order from ubereats but nope, its a place that pretends to be 10 different restaurants.

Less dedication to quality, more dedication to cutting corners and boosting profit at the expense of brand value because a lot of Americans just don't care and will eat any kind of slop. It's also why KFC and many other American fast food restaurants taste better in Europe and Asia than in America, ironically.
I dont agree with 99% of your posts, but this one is so 100% spot on its scary.

It's shockingly easy to make fried chicken that tastes as good as the restaurant at home. I didn't believe it myself until I tried it. I bought a box of Kentucky Kernel seasoned flour on Amazon. I dipped the chicken in water, dredged it in the flour, and fried it in oil until golden brown. Nothing fancy, just oil in a pot on the stovetop. It tastes EXACTLY like the good ol' days of KFC.

Mind you I tried the gluten free version of the flour since my kid has Celiac and there was basically no taste or texture difference, absolutely delicious.
In Japan they pan fry with sake, and it makes the juiciest chicken I've ever had. But you're right, considering how easy it is to make top tier chicken at home, it's surprising these places still exist

Well that explains part of the problem too. When people have such little standards for themselves, corporations can get away with it. Normally competition would nudge things in the right direction

I still somewhat like KFC mostly out of nostalgia but what I don't understand is how KFC is so much more expensive compared to something like Popeye's. Their chicken is tiny too.

But if you have a Korean fried chicken place near you, check that out.
Great stuff. I would go more often but I'm too lazy drive 30 minutes just for fried chicken.

When I had it in 80s, I loved it. So much so, when I came to US for good in 1990, first stop was KFC. Was disappointed. Since then, I only had it once in maybe a decade... And each time, always disappointed.

I have to thank KFC, because after it gave me such bad diarrhea for 3 days in 2009, I decided to basically forgo eating at any fast food place and now just make my own. Chicken, burgers, pizza, burritos, tacos, I just do at home where the food is fresh and clean.

The last time I actually ate at a fast food restaurant was an IN-N-Out about 7 years back and that was because I was on a road trip with the family and on the way the kids were hungry so we stopped over to get some food.

As some have stated in the thread, it's much better to cook your own. You have online recipes, youtube, and air fryers are now pretty cheap to do it.

KFC back in the day was the best (besides mom's). I once asked my then 5-year-old granddaughter if she wanted KFC. Her response was "I don't want freaky fried chicken." While she misunderstood me, the statement stands. It sucks in my area now. I hardly eat fast food anymore but when I do, I avoid places like KFC and Dairy Queen that were considered a go to when I was a kid.

Don't get me started on the price of fast food these days...

Growing up Kentucky Fried Chicken was amazing. Suddenly it’s KFC. Then it starts to slide.

Sorry I always loved Roy Roger’s chicken more.

Only time I ever had KFC that didn’t agree with me was in Kuala Lumpur.
The had spent a month in Asia for my honeymoon me and my wife were eating street foods in Thailand , Bali and Malaysia without issues) the one night we decide we want something different we had KFC. Something went wrong and our stomachs were odd afterward.

It's fast food. They serve it fast, you eat it quick. I don't think they expect you to linger too long on its 'finer' qualities. It's there to satisfy your hunger and not your senses.

I'll get it when I'm brutally hungover and it's ok, the chips are still shit tho I cannot work out why they can't fix that. The hot wings and gravy are very good. The price is so absurdly high nowadays I actually learned how to make half decent fried chicken at home.

Don't know if it went wrong. A lot more places opened up. People are eating healthier and/or trying other different types of food. There's more of a selection now. Back in the day it used to be the fried chicken spot and it isn't anymore. I haven't had it in a while, I can't eat fried chicken anymore, but last time I did it tasted exactly the same as I remember it.
