When did the ESRB rating system go into affect?

What date exactly and what was the first game to be branded with one of their insignias that now muck all boxart/discs for current games?

I've seen a lot of old games with no ESRB ratings on them so I'm just wondering if they came out before the rating system had a chance to grab them. :D

All I remember is that is was in the mid-90s (94?) and that Sega had their own rating system for a short while before that.

"MA-17" :)

I remember in school, we had to read this thing called "Weekly Reader," and I vaguely remember the story about game ratings and it had Chuck Rock on the cover the issue. So I'm gonna say around when Chuck Rock came out on the Genesis or SNES. I dont think the game had a rating though so I dont know why it was on there

I'm not sure if it's the same as ESRB though. Was the rating "Kids to Adults" part of ESRB or some seperate rating group thingy?

K-A was the ESRB, I believe

They also had a "ec" rating for early childhood

According to them they started rating in 1994.

Of course they also feature a Joe Lieberman quote about being the "best entertainment rating system" in the U.S. there as well. :D

K-A became E and EC still exists if I'm not mistaken.

Seriously, how hard is it to Google? You type "ESRB" in Google, and then you're literally two clicks away from http://www.esrb.org/about.asp, where you learn that "The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) is a self-regulatory body for the interactive entertainment software industry established in 1994".

Laziness ahoy.
