When Shigeru Miyamoto dies.....

....will you make a trek to japan to visit his grave? The era of videogame Icons is slowly coming to an end I believe. Due to rising costs of games and team size very few developers ever reach such legendary or almost mythical status. Sure we've got talented folk making games today but will they reach Miyamoto's status 10 - 15 years from now?
 
Uh, no. I'll probably post on a message board, like GAF. Something like "That sucks."

Then later I'll post about a game I will play, like Zelda: Twilight Princess. And maybe I'll play it in his honor or something.
 
Yamauchi will have perfected his fountain of youth machine before that time approaches. Then he and Miyamoto can go out pimping together.

I think people such as Will Wright, Peter Molyneux, Richard Garriot, John Carmack, and Sid Meier are every bit as legendary or "mythical" as Miyamoto and their contributions to gaming just as important.
 
Your thread title gave me pause.

New GAF rule: Miyamoto and dies can never again appear in the same sentence. (<- except for that last time) Actually, not in the same thread to be safe. I fully expect Miyamoto to outlive all of us and I hope that he would make the trip to visit my grave when that happens (the least he can do since I played all of his goddamned games)

Miyamoto is alone responsible for the most memorable characters in gaming and it can be argued that he brought back the industry from it's crash with mario bros.

We can argue til the sun goes down, but ManaByte is correct. Those figures he mentioned (well, I take exception with at least one... but whatever) are just as important and iconic to the industry as Miyamoto. You can make an arbitrary ranking if it makes you feel better, but it doesn't change the truth behind it.
 
When Miyamoto dies I will dedicate that very day of every year to play only Miyamoto produced titles spanning his entire career. Now let us never speak of this depressing subject ever again.

The PC industry didn't crash as badly as consoles. Sure, for a while people didn't want "games", instead they wanted "simulations", but PC games were still being made.

Yeah, but Mario is more well known around the world than Mickey Mouse. Can the same be said about the DOOM marine?

sure, but Miyamoto is like a god. and probably more recognizable than any other person in the industry. and i think if miyamoto ever dies (i hope not) i bet the whole country will take the day off to pay their respect......
 
Mana does make a good point that there are plenty of industry icons other than Miyamoto but if you see, all of them listed got their start when the medium was still relatively young. I do believe that there will continue to be new industry icons that reach these very levels but they definitely have to work harder than any before them. The industry is getting larger by the day and it is becoming ever difficult to gain "Miyamoto-level" recognition but there will most definitely still be brilliant minds that can do it.

When Will Wright dies...

Same thing. Nothing. Maybe an "aww, man" on that one, but that's about it. My world didn't momentarily collapse like before.

You mean the Will Wright of SimCity (1989), the Peter Molyneux of Populous (1989), the Richard Garriot of Ultima (1980), the John Carmack of Doom (1993), and the Sid Meier of Civilization (1991) and in fact given title credit as early as Sid Meier's Pirates (1987)?

Leaving relative significance, which is as much a matter of taste as anything, out of it, they're still not exactly a counter to the argument that it was much easier to make a name for oneself in the past.

Oh please, for the love of all that is good and holy can you please take a step back and recognize the difference between personal investment in a particular industry figure and the objective importance and influence of other iconic videogame heads.

Will Wright has had an incredible effect on this industry, easily within the same league as Miyamoto. Whether or not you personally, or a million other people feel he's on the same level as "Miyamoto" is totally irrelevant. A point was made that an age of icons is ending. This is simply FALSE, since there are plenty of icons left that have been absolutely critical to the evolvement of the industry in various sectors.

Anywho, I think the point of the thread is not so much Miyamoto, but the fact that back then, games were created by a very small number of people, and as such, you had your easily identifiable "stars" at the helm of most projects...and each person really stood out...but now with such large development teams, most people are just "Misc. poly-crunching dude number 452394". Is there room for such individual creative input as dev team numbers continue to get bigger and bigger?

Oh, those fuckers are significant alright. No dispute here. I've played all of their games and loved them. I've had the pleasure of meeting a few of them too. A++ contributors to the industry and icons in some circles, no doubt.

I was making a small comparison about the potential impact of their deaths. Although, I'd be saddened if any of these guys took a dirt nap, I'd probably retire from playing games if I became acquainted with a world that didn't have a Miyamoto-helmed Zelda on the horizon. There are probably even a few GAFers that have cyanide pills waiting for that very occasion.

Also, take a joke.
 
When Shiggy dies, that's a part of my childhood that dies.. Since 1986, his games were a part of my life, and some of the few games that my dad would play with me. The memories alone, of what he created, are important to me. Same as if Stan Lee died, it's from my childhood...I'll probably take a shot or roll a blunt, and then game play some Zelda.

Alright, I feel that I have to make this post so that I may have some peace tonight.

Here's hoping that Miyamoto goes on to live for many, many more years. Becoming ever more eccentric as his age increases yet continue making brilliant games off of this eccentricity. I can associate a huge chunk of my childhood to Miyamoto so he definitely has every last ounce of respect I can give him. Sure there are other industry veterans and icons that I admire but Miyamoto holds a special place among them.
 
Nintendo's already developed a Game Boy that prolongs life indefinitely -- they just haven't talked about it publically because they don't want the competition to steal their ideas.

.... a microphone will be secured just above his sphincter. Embalming will be delayed to let the natural gasses of decomposition build up (which is amplified in those who follow a traditional Japanese diet), until a series of blips, bleeps, and bloops emanate from his anus. The audio files will then be altered in pitch/octave/duration to bring to life a new generation of lovable mascot friends. Expensive voice actors, rue the day!







On a personal note, he'll be missed.

I consider the people you mentioned as part of miyamoto's "generation" of developers, which pretty much hammers my point....fewer devs reach this legendary status because they don't stand out as much or are not relied upon to help market a game.
