True that's why I've kind of given up on the thread.
I would argue the bigger problem is the personalities given to the females nowadays not necessarily their looks, women are represented in a very masculine way in western media in general.

I got to this thread pretty fucking late…

My thoughts are that western devs prioritize designing games catered for everyone and most people AREN’T pretty in real life lol.
It’s kind of what happened once devs went for the more “realistic” design route, but that doesn’t mean there still aren’t super sexy girls in games.
Just less.
All of this is subjective tho because we don’t find all the same people more or less attractive/ugly.
In the end, these are fucking games. No should really care THAT much, I care more about the QUALITY of the game and if it lives up to my purchase!

So we’re doing escapism and bring aliens and demons into our games because escapism is awesome but then we decide to uglify game characters to not be too unrealistic?
I make my own game. Main character deliberately looks like all the sliders are going past the max value
Tbh there is nothing realistic in there. Except maybe trees. And clouds I guess. Kids come up with enemy designs, it’s living rocks and big mushrooms spitting flies etc. Kids are awesome at thinking outside of the box!

So yeah, you could say it’s art direction, you could say it’s just a natural evolution of graphical fidelity, or even just a “wider” representation of the general public.

I don’t think graphical fidelity has anything to do with it, it’s no doubt art direction and in some cases a fear/drive to get the PR they want.
Cyberpunk 2077 annoys me, on the one hand they clearly wanted to be controversial and get PR as a controversial game, on the other hand they went super meh with the main character and both the man and woman just looks like a random fitness person and you have no choices except for the dick and breast size. I still love the game.

So, if the game is ALSO GOOD, the extra attention brings more sales. It's called marketing.

I was disappointed to see that Switch Sports didn’t allow me to adjust dick size. I’m guessing it would give an unfair advantage in Tennis, so they left it out.

The games with a super uggo main character do stand out, but I don't think they are taking over the industry or anything. Alloy did look pretty in Forbidden West, even though I do enjoy those meme images where she's super fat -- always good for a chuckle.
It is a conscious choice, to go with a character looking like the chic in ME: Andromeda, but it doesn't happen at developer level, and I guess whatever point they are trying to make (which is kind of obvious; "not all women look like models" has for some reason be hammered by having you play as an ugly woman, complete with... damaged facial animations). If it's done badly, only for ideological purposes then I'll probably avoid the game, since it's not really addressed or appealing to me.
However, this "cuts" both sides. There was at least one mod for Half Life 2 that offered a model for Alyx, which made her look like a hooker. The original model for her is very pleasant in the eyes and completely fitting with the premise of the game. This is just one counter-example that I vividly recall, but there probably are more like these. Also not appealing to me.

It’s more like the people designing these characters have this thought that smart, brave, strong women cannot be beautiful.
They also seem to think that it’s somehow better that a male gamer controls a smart, brave, strong woman than a beautiful woman.
