Got my new computer and tried to install it from Microsoft's page, but the damn worms or whatever took hold before I could get the download to work (and they don't let you download an executable anymore for some reason.) Now my task manager's dead, spwayre stoppers aren't helping, and everything I install makes my computer hang...grr

Just go to microsoft.com and order it on cd. The cd is free and theres no shipping charge. Came in less than a week for me last month.

Yeah dude; he wasn't able to find the actual .exe of Service Pack 2 because Microsoft tries to hide it from end users, so I linked to a page where you can download it directly, thus answering the question posed in the title of the thread!

You didn't plug it directly into the cable/dsl modem, did you?

Putting the dsl cable in before I got everything set up was my first mistake because I thought that stupid exploit would have been cleared up by now. Plus the ebay store I got this thing from lied about what it came pre-installed with so I had to go online to get the drivers to everything

I do not think SP2 is what you need. Sounds like a low level format is what you need.

That sounds like a worm that attacks the RPC/lsass.exe service which causes the machine to be all kinds of fucked up. Service pack 2 fixes this issue by fixing the vulnerability in the OS.

Btw, you gotta love microsoft's error reporting tool. I had a computer with 37GB's of memory dumps (each time it did a dump the file size was bigger) because it could never send them to microsoft.

Installing SP2 onto an already infected PC is a bad idea. Unplug the machine from the network, reformat, turn on the firewall, reconnect, download SP2, and then start from there.

Never experienced it. I have zero SPs. I have nothing against them, it is just my install is so old they would only cause more problems.

That is what I would do. Firewall +AVS gets installed before the new XP install goes online.

Well, if it's a worm this is not really necessary (trust me, I've had my share of worms on PCs at work... never had to reformat or reimage). And if it's a worm such as Korgo and it's hundreds of variants then you can safely install SP2 on it as long as it's not connected to an infected network (including the internet). However, this poses a problem if you don't have SP2 on a CD.

Do you know what worm you have belgurdo?

I'm not certain since the antivirus programs have stopped tons of executables, but right now I keep getting a message about a "dcom exploit" and there's the aforementioned task manager problem

Actually I'd dl the .exe before formatting, (burn to cd on put it on another HD/partition) then reinstall everything offline.

Personally, that's what I've done, but in the event that the shere multitude of crap on this guy's machine effects burning or something, that would be the order to do it.

Well there are no questions in his post and the title is "Where can I get Windows XP service pack 2 at?" which is why I believe everyone above you answered with a way to get SP2 :D

Another vote for install firewall/NAT router, reformat computer, reinstall XP, then go online to download SP2. Download all updates from Windows Update for vanilla XP, and then it will give you SP2.

Never, ever, ever go online without a firewall/router.

If your computer is brand new, the store you got it from really should have installed service pack 2 for you. All new Windows XP CDs come with it built in, so it's surprising that you didn't have it already. The best way to do it is to download it on another computer and burn it onto CD so that you can install it on your new PC without connecting it to the Internet. Since your PC is already infected by worms/spyware/whatever you need to get those off before installing SP2. I suggest having a look at my Spyware and Virus Cleaning Guide which may help you to get rid of the stuff infesting your new PC.

Thanks for the help. I formatted the drive last night and after I put all the drivers back in I'll try again, but this time I'll do it with the firewall on and an anti-virus running, as little as it'll probably help. If I screw it up again I'll just set up my old computer and burn a service pack for myself like you said
