Where did all the PSP hype go?

Just a short while ago this place was flooded with PSP threads. Now on the first page are only two threads related to PSP - one about screen protectors and another about Memory Sticks.

So what happened? The thing came out in US and everybody lost interest? No new games to be hyped about?

I just last week visited Vancouver and Dallas and PSP was in good supply in the stores I visited. No UMD movies though.

My own experience is that after the initial PSP hype, DS has provided me with more fun. Just recently got Electroplankton, Kirby and Yoshi's Touch and Go. Only new PSP game for me to match those is Wipeout.

I'm looking forward to see some UMD movie reviews (seriously, from a curiosity perspective). I'd also like to see hype for any game in the pipeline - I guess all is saved for E3.

Hype is generally a factor only prior to release. Now most people who want one have it and are happily playing it.

Pretty much.

Plus I don't feel like starting new threads about Ridge Racer or Untold Legends. They've been done.

Huh? There are 22 PSP threads in the first five pages alone. Twenty-two. The PSP is probably the most talked about thing I've ever seen on GAF.

Here's a little hype... Pursuit Force from Big Big Studios.

Don't mind Chittagong. He likes to stir the pot, and since he is an ex Nintendo employee he had to create a thread to try and convince himself the DS is worth the money. :D

It's natural for hype to die down. I think its more note-worthy that there hasn't been a backlash to the PSP hype because the product lives up to expectations.

Can't wait for e3 PSP announcements and footage.

Some of those PSP commericials stink.

Heh, they keep showing that commercial with that black guy walking to the bus stop and morphing into different characters. I thought it was cool at the beginning, but got sick of it real fast. I guess this applies to like 99% of the commercials that I've enjoyed at one point or another.

:lol

Had to think actually for a while if this was the case... then remembered that didn't pay for the DS or PSP myself. True for the stirring the pot thing though.

My dilemma is that I would like to play and be seen with PSP rather than the plasticky DS with crap screen quality, but DS has the games I want to play currently.

Of course I know time will fix the PSP game catalog, did so with PS2 also.

I figured you were still pissed at Sony for not making UMD discs coffee resistent! :P

I'm in a different boat. I have five launch games right now:

Ridge Racers
Wipeout
Lumines
Metal Gear Acid
Untold Legends

Right now I have more PSP games than I have time to play but there are still a couple more PSP games I want: Dynasty Warriors, Twisted Metal, MLB, and Hot Shots Golf which is out May 3. Maybe even Midnight Club 3 dub edition PSP depending on how it takes off.

Hype normally dies upon release.

We're onto the next gen consoles now thanks. :)

...but yeah, I'm fully 360 hyped now too. Just heard today how widely it's being shown already. Gotta admire the power of MS NDAs.

There are absolutely no 'must have' games - a Final Fantasy or GTA game on launch would have helped immensely
:lol

i'm doing fine with the non-must have games Lumines and Wipeout Pure. Ape Escape is a bit of a bore, but i'm sure i'll have fun with Ridge Racers when i break down and get it.

Well having played RR, Lumines and MGA already in December, only Wipeout has excited me now. Out of the games you list, I can't really recommend anything but Hot Shots Golf, it's pretty damn good. Dynasty Warriors is very meh, as was Twisted Metal to me - although the online gaming implementation is rock solid. Dunno about MLB.

EDIT: and must agree with Aoi about Ape Escape, very boring. I played it for around five hours above the Atlantic - feels like SM64 done wrong. Absolutely horrible glitches with collision detection and camera angles that drive the frustration to a pretty high level. Level design semi-ok, although lacking the intuitive Disneyworld-like flow of SM64.

Yeah but I know you aren't a huge Dynasty WArriors fan while I am. :P

MLB PSP turned out great. In ways better than the PS2 version overall.

Of course if I got free HDTV sets from MS I may be more pumped about the Xbox 360 as well. :D

Hype?

The PSP came out about a month ago.

The hype is over. Now we're talking about games, accessories, and speculating on releases.

nobody cares about PSP anymore because the mystery behind it is now completely gone for American gamers as well as Japanese gamers.

Now everyone cares about PS3 and Xbox 360 again because that's what is next on the revelation meter!

Ahaha. I guess I hadn't considered how with the PSP handhelds are to the point where they can release unealistically high resolution versions of the screenshots. :)

My hype died with a lack of games that i'm interested in (5 over the next 12 months, fanf*ckingtastic!) and the steep price and small availability of 1GB+ pro duos. If E3 doesn't bring a huge list of great games there may be mutiny and my PSP could be the first to walk the plank :lol .

I gotta be honest with you, I have never heard of Climax EVER before. And personally I tried some Capcom, Level 5 and other non Square Enix RPG's on PS2 and didn't like them.

Seriously if Square put out a Final Fantasy ultimate pack (6, 7, 8, 9) I'd be all over PSP. The PSP rpg lineup blows IMO.

Btw: do you know what's going on with FF12?

I am totally missing the funny here.

Sorry, I don't see any PS3 or Revolution hype here.

Going by the amount of exclusives Sony is going to put on PS2 this year and first half of next years tells me that PS3 is far far away.

yeh it's all Xbox 360 hype at that website!

heh, but PS3 isn't "far far away", unless you think it's not going to release in 2006.

I was only talking about this forums. Anyway I don't care about PS3 right now, I just want Final Fantasy XII, Grandia III and some other RPG's.

Waiting for May 16, 11 AM EST! (Square Enix E3 PC) :D

I'm most excited to hear about Revolution because there are the most unknowns attached to that. But Xbox 360 and PS3 info is right around the corner, so either way I'm hyped!
