Where do I find frames for giant posters (40x55 inches)?

I asked for a few for christmas, and I won't put them up unless they're in a frame. Where the hell do I get frames that big?

I think you could get frames that size at Michael's. If you don't have a Michael's in your area, I recommend trying an art supply store, or an actual framing shop. You won't be able to get a neccesarily cheap frame, but they can make you a basic frame for a poster that will be a perfect fit.

yea, at this size, I don't expect the frames to be particularly cheap.

Any idea if Michael's will have just a frame, or if there'll be some kind of plastic/plexiglass sheet to go over the poster as well?

Frames that size usually come with glass or plexiglass. If you go to a framing shop and tell them what you want, they can quote you a price. I did this a lot in college, especially around the time of my senior show. I got some very nice custom frames with non-scratch plexiglass built specifically for my artwork. It wasn't terribly expensive. :)

cool.

Any idea off the top of your head how much the custom stuff cost you? I'm trying to give my parents an idea of the price.

It depends on what you want. Frankly, if you go to a shop and tell them what you want to spend on framing, they'll probably be able to find something within your price range. I take it you want something functional, not flashy. You might be able to get three sturdy frames that size with cheap plexiglass for....maybe fifty bucks?

bumping this, so I don't start a new one.

I've gone to Michael's, and they couldn't make one for less than $350. Fucking ridiculous price.

I've been to a local art shop, and they were $150 for a single frame.

Are there any feasible solutions? I can't afford that much per poster when I've got 4 of them that are that large.

Well, let's look at other solutions. If you take your posters to a Mail Boxes Etc., Kinko's, or some other quickie print shop, you can probably get them laminated dirt cheap. That doesn't solve your frame problem, but it does prevent your posters from getting wrinkled/dirty/torn in the meantime.

Custom sized frames are expensive. Buy a regular frame and have them matte the poster.

Glass at that size is always going to be expensive...

If you're in the mood to DIY...

Get some wall molding from a place like Lowe's or Builder's Square. (i don't think Home Depot sells it, at least i know they don't sell lumber). They should be able to cut it to the length you need, and cut the ends at 45 degree angles. They should also have the plexiglass and the little clips to hold everythin in place. They're usually in the aisle with the stuff like nails and screws. You may need to go to an art supply store and get a heavy matte board for the backing. Paint and/or finish the molding as desired.

Definitely more effort, but cheaper in the long run. Don't forget, measure twice, cut once.
