Where does a man go for a good single-player pirate game?

Gaiff

SBI’s Resident Gaslighter
So no Skull & Bones (lol) or Sea of Thieves. I already played Black Flag, so not that one either.

Despite being one of the more popular fictional setting, pirate games are uncommon, especially in the AAA space. I could also play some lesser-known games if they are good. I hear Sid Meier's Pirates is still the gold standard, so maybe I should give this a shot?

Recommend me some pirate games and I do mean pirate, so no game where all you do is control a vessel. I want to hunt treasure, discover islands, swashbuckle, raid ships, etc.

-Skies of Arcadia: Played it (not what I'm looking for. I want traditional piracy)
-Wind Waker: Played it (hate it)
-Assassin's Creed Black Flag

Risen 2.
It's far from perfect and not as good as the first one, but at its core it has that typical Piranha Bytes charm and it kinda NAILS the feeling of climbing up to become a badass pirate captain and achieving things.

Curse of Monkey Island, Skies of Arcadia, these two for sure first by those who already said.

Skies of Arcadia.

Sid Meier's Pirates is still the best you can get sadly
I've been wanting another pirate game for ages. I really enjoyed Black Flag at least.
I was hoping something better had come out in the 21 years since its release, but if that's still the best, I'll go for it.

Sea dogs 1
Sea Dogs 2 (pirates of the caribean)
Sid Meiers Pirates! (3d remake)

amazing games.
You are not a pirate gamer if you never finished Sea Dogs 1. That's hardcore

Pray Rockstar makes a new ip that is based around pirates. I have been doing this for aroudn 15y, and haven't got shit, so welcome at being disappointed.

As is, there not a single quality pirate game. This theme deserves RDR2 level of attention, and no developers are ever investing the talent and resources needed to make a real banger.

Pirates! Gold is still the GOAT. I still love how it looks. The newer version was ok but didn't have the same charm imo.

The Pirates of the Caribbean game from 2003 was good. Didn't have much to do with the films iirc, it was just a Sea Dogs game with the POTC name slapped on it.

If there was any studios I would love to see do a Pirate game and know it would be done masterfully it would be Rockstar and Warhorse (Kingdom Come devs)

Both approaches from each studio, per their respective engine and styles, would be the ultimate match made in heaven.

Warhorse ain't a bad idea, but Rockstar is flawless for the job. Their amazing characters, everyone well written with a serious tone and attention to detail is exactly what's needed to create a remarkable pirate game. Just imagine the kind of shit they'd do with weather and water physics because it's so important in a pirate game. God dammmit we will never see this, it's only in my head forever😭😭😭

Risen 2 is very pirate-themed. Although, it also includes some supernatural elements. And playing the first game helps to describe the world of Risen. Legendary jank, too. Just like every PB game.

Galleon on OG Xbox is also a pirate game. Although it's more of an action-platformer.

I second the recommendation for the Sea Dog games. You might even want to play the newer City of Abandoned Ships, or the newest To Each His Own. But be warned this games don't hold your hand, but if they click you'll be sucked in. The devs are supposedly working on remakes of the series, but have been radio silent for two years.

Another option is Tempest. This was a Priming Gaming giveaway so be sure to check you might already have it.

Monkey Island was made as if by people who actually liked pirate stories and understood why they were entertaining and not all tedious management stuff about counting barrels of water and knowing what grapeshot is.

I'm in the same boat. I played Pirates on the Amiga 35 years ago, was awesome at the time but I don't know if it holds up. A great new pirates game has been one of my constant wishes for a long time. Sea of Thieves always looked interesting but I don't play online. Black Flag pulled many right strings for me but the AC theme gets in the way.
I would say. Replay Monkey Island, might not be exactly what you want but you'll definitely enjoy your time with it.

You don't

I think assassins creed odyssey sometimes has pirate elements, although it's not really recognized as a pirate game

I don't like this either, BUT ain't nobody is gonna tell me that their story telling isn't amazing, especially for an open world game. They want you to progress the story the way it was designed, that's why you can't do wtf ever like in other games. You might think that this is a bad thing, an outdated design, but there's a reason why they haven't abandoned this for all these years. It's not like they couldn't do it, but if they do, you might miss what they want you to see, and for the main story, i am fine with that.
