Which films have the best soundtracks? (Not OST)

I'm not talking OST's so don't start posting John Williams and Howard Shore OSTs.

I was listening to the 28 Days Later soundtrack and thought I would post this thread.

As far as soundtracks, Almost Famous, Singles, Lost in Translation and Rushmore come to mind. As far as scores I like The Fountain, Dances With Wolves, Batman, and Last of the Mohicans.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't get the no score thing. I'll just recommended Back to the future and Ferris Bueller's Day Off then, for the sheer amount of quality in the soundtracks.

Garden State
Lost in Translation
Pan's Labyrinth (even if it's just 21 variations of the same song)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain

Collateral
Heat
Miami Vice
Vanilla Sky
The Beach

Many of the tracks aren't. I'm not talking about tracks like 'In the House, In a Heatbeat'
5 of 21 aren't original score...

Not exactly a great example of what you're looking for.

Hey I just said listening to certain tracks on it made me think of this topic, not that 28 Days Later was the best example of it.

You've got your lingo mixed up, Sculli. You ask for the best soundtrack, but then say you dont want Original SoundTracks, which are the same thing. You mean to say that you're not talking about scores.

Soundtrack - not original music, generally licensed pop/rock music from bands
Score - original music composed specifically for the film/TV show, and usually instrumental

Sorry, Sculli, this is just one of those little things that I always nag about.

the Original in OST makes it a score doesnt it? so he wants the best ST, not OST, which is correct, maybe =D

The Shining. Bartok, Ligeti, Penderecki mothafuckassss

Actually, pretty much any Kubrick film from the 60's on.

Park Chan-wook and Werner Herzog also know their way around putting music to films.

MAGNOLIA

i also love the fact that aimee mann's music had such a deep effect on the movie's plot and some of its lines. p.t.a. was obsessed with her new album when he was writing the script, and there's even a line from "deathly" word for word in the movie.

yes.

Also Miami Vice and Snatch are incredible. The music in Miami vice, especially Blue Foundation, is incredible.

agreed, except that the line isn't word for word:

song: "Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing each other again?"
movie: "Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing me again?"

/nitpick :P

Run Lola Run, Stark Raving Mad, Hackers 1 and 2, The Beach, The Matrix

For OSTs, definitely The Fountain

ha, busted.

another great soundtrack/film interaction is at the very end, when john c. reilly is talking to claudia while she's sitting up in bed. "save me" is playing over this entire scene, and you can't hear anything he's saying to her--the only hint as to what's being said are the subtle movements on her face. but as soon as "save me" comes to the bridge ("you struck me dumb, like radium"), claudia breaks into a huge smile and the credits roll.

my heart is breaking just thinking about it

ya, one of the best endings ever. i re-watched just the ending (last 2-3 minutes) like 20 times over with a friend a couple of years ago. hah. we were so mesmerized by the perfection of the timing and the emotional impact of the scene.

I'm pretty sure the term OST is stolen from Japan's Anime. They call them specifically OST's. It's used to describe every single piece of music played, original or not.

If you go to Amazon.com and look up Lion King's soundtrack and *The Crow's soundtrack they are both called soundtracks. One actually being a score and one being a collaboration of artists.

*The Crow is my contribution :)

A couple more:

American Psycho
Valley Girl
Lost Boys
Less Than Zero
Tank Girl

I decided to check and see if the Christine soundtrack was available on CD and was disappointed to find that it was only released on LP. The Christine score is available on CD but the soundtrack is not. The soundtrack has great 50s and early 60s music.
