Which group has to do the most Damage Control after seeing their Next Gen system?

Sony came up aces.

MS has the whole PD0 debacle.

Nintendo didn't show anything new I'm a bit diaspointed. The revolution is coming out Q4 2006. So you cant really blame the N for not really showing the Revolution stats and games, considering they have next years E3 to do it unlike Sony, and MS.

Sony has next E3 as well, they just want to stall 360 before it's even launched.

SONY - A

What Sony did right:

- PS3 fully BC with PS2 and PS1
- PS3 is the only system with a true Next gen format
- PS3 OUTPUTS TO TWO MONITORS BABY! Time Crisis, Ridge Racer with each player on a separate screen without needing two consoles? Fuck yeah.
- PS3 outputs 1080*p*
- PS3 is easy to develop for
- PS3 is about a year away (a solid 6 year generation gap between PS1 and PS2 and PS3)
- PS3 supporting memory stick and USB
- PS3 is a slot loader

What Sony did wrong:

- Not have a model of the controller for people to hold...right now, the controller is the only real "x" factor
- PS3 might have a fairly large footprint (ala Xbox) but that's not a major disadvantage
- PS3 has a funky styling. The original PS2 was a pretty ugly machine though too and that didn't stop people from enjoying it.
- No apparent slots for PS1/PS2 memory cards and controllers...which would make backwards compatibility a little difficult (especially for games that used special peripherals like Time Crisis or DDR games)

Overall:

Sony wins E3. PS3 has me really excited for next gen. Going forward, what Sony will have to do is make sure that the launch hardware is stable and that the launch titles bring something worth playing.

MICROSOFT - C

What MS did right:

- Xbox Live sounds like it will be better than ever.
- MS is at least still trying to win over big Japanese third parties despite many who think MS should just give up on Japan.
- The X360 controller looks like sex. So far, I think it is going to be the best controller next gen.
-Packed in HDD

What MS did wrong:

- X360 is an ugly design. Not much uglier than PS3, Xbox or PS2 though, but still the ugliest console in a while.
- Backwards Compatibility is a joke. A half measure is worse than nothing frankly.
- The launch line up so far looks pretty weak. The better stuff (GoW) isn't going to hit until next fall
- No next gen format. 9 GB Dual layer DVD vs PS3's 54 GB BRD? Think of how the Gamecube's 1.5 GB disc format handicapped multiplatform titles for GC...same deal will apply here.
- Only 1080i as the maximum output. MS touted this gen as the "HD gen" but it's no where near as "HD" as the competition.

Overall, MS would have won E3 if Sony didn't completely outdo them in every catagory with PS3. Ultimately, X360 just feels like a stop gap to me now. No true HD media format and incomplete HD resolutions highlight that MS isn't thinking as long term as Sony. The backwards compatibility fiasco is also a huge irritant. MS should have waited and launched X360 after PS3.

NINTENDO - F

What Nintendo did right:

- Nice, compact clean design for Revolution
- Rev is a slot loader
- Rev is BC with Gamecube and will emulate NES, SNES and N64

What Nintendo did wrong:

- No real Rev info besides that
- Do we have to pay to play SNES games we already own? Screw that
- Only DVD, no next gen format
- Another GBA?
- DS showing was not interesting
- A bunch of Mario spin offs?

Nintendo is just continuing their slide into irrelevance.

I personally think Sony has the most damage control. I want info on games for systems I have now, not systems I can't even buy for a year, and PSP doesn't have all that many good games coming out for it (Neither does DS, but it has more than PSP,) and when PSP's novelties wear off, games are what's going to set apart the DS and PSP. Sony needs GAMES to win the handheld war, and DS is doing more delivering in that category now. Granted that may change later, but for now, DS has the upper hand.

Revolution has some great features, I LOVE the ability to download old Nintendo games, and can see using that to tide me over between big releases.

Sony has their usual GTA (All the games in that series since GTA3 are so similar, I consider that the new NES Mega Man series, new levels and weapons, same gameplay, good as it may be,) GT5 (This may be a showstopper if its graphics are as revolutionary as GT4's were,) Devil May Cry 4 (This series is pretty fun, but from what I hear of the american version, I'm importing DMC3,) etc.

Microsoft has a few nice surprises in store that mnight just make me get an XBOX360 (And the backwards compatability is good because I don't have an XBOX,) but 10x what the original sold (In Japan anyway) is still only GC levels and not near enough to win the genenation (I'm going by the weekly MC numbers hers, I don't know what the totals are.)

In conclusion, the downloading feature, and Square Enix warming up to it makes Revolution my early favorite, again like the handheld war, anything can happen and it can change, but I'm just going on what I see now.

I don't know about damage control... but there sure are a lot of GAF MS haters that got a full helping of crow to eat. I'll dig up some quotes once the E3 hype dies.

Square Enix - haters said it would never happen... it happened
BC = it's there (limited or otherwise... it's there)
wireless controllers = yep
512 MB ram -haters said MS wouldn't upgrade = got it
built in hd - too expensive = it's included
XBL should be free = wow, looky there

MS has delivered the hardware. There is no doubt in my mind that the software will soon follow.

I don't think there is much crow for haters to eat, there still aren't enough details for most of your points.

Square Enix: we don't know what games they will make for xbox360. If they only make online games that are also on other platforms, this won't make much of a difference since PS3 will probably have the main (numbered FF and DQ) offline rpgs.

BC: too early to brag about this. If it is only for a few of the big Xbox titles how much will this matter? PS3 is fully backwards compatible.

512 MB: good to hear

Built in HD: also good to hear

XBL free: correct me if i'm wrong but the free silver XBL will not let you play regular retail Xbox360 games (with the exception of MMORPG games) other than on "free weekends". If you have to pay for XBL gold to play most games, is XBL really free?

Apparently Nintendo showed a tiny Revolution and that was it. No games, nothing. And it requires an ADD ON to play DVDs? Jesus fucking Christ my toaster plays DVDs now.

Sony floored me with their presentation. No idea if everything was real-time, but it certainly was good at getting me hyped.

Nintendo didn't show hardly anything. I'm sad.

Xbox 360's showing absolutely sucked. They've got a nice thing going with Live for the hardcore crowd, but no games interest me except Oblivion which will be on PS3 too.

:lol :lol

If that add-on bit is indeed accurate.. then damn. It will need an add-on to play DVDs in Q4 2006? Sounds too insane to be true.

I think, if anything, Sony fans also have to run lots of damage control to explain/downplay 1) all the coniving pre-rendered footage Sony has shown 2) the size of the PS3 beast (biggest of the 3 next-gen consoles by far) 3) lack of built-in hard-drive solution (hello, this is next gen) 4) lack of any real online service/presence progress and 5) the horrid controller design (no real improvements and they've actually made it look more painful to hold?).

Microsoft, because they showed their hand and it got blown away by PS3. Nintendo didn't show shit, which is a problem in it's own right, but not the type of damage control that MS needs to be doing (*cough* wallguy)

Couldn't have said it better myself.

MS, hands down. Nintendo's minimal Revolution showing disappointed people with what they didn't show, but that's better than MS, who disappointed people with what they actually did show.

Microsoft showed everything they got and dissapointed. Sony showed everything they got and impressed. Nintendo showed jack shit and disappointed. You be the judge.

Currently Sony only has to damage control the PS3's controller which seems to very poorly recieved (I too agree its about 4 giant leaps backwards going from the dual shock 2) and the fact that 80% of the footage shown during there presentation was EA like production goals, in other words the games are probally going to look like that at some point but footage was by no means realtime. In other words not much to damage control at all, very easy to just say the controller and system aren't final which all the official shots do in fact say , so it could get slightly revamped before its actual launch and as for the movies well, they could just do the PR think and say , it's a target the actual game could turn out EVEN BETTER (tee hee).

Microsoft has quite a bit to worry about, the Xbox launching so soon after the previous one , the lack of HD media for games, the alleged sorry looking state of some of the launch titles (based entirely on screenshots mind you... ) Backwards compatibility possibly working only with select popular titles. Much harder it is for MS to spin some of this around but heregoes, the choice of using dvd instead of hd dvd or bluray well, obviously neither of those techs are ready yet really and still won't be in the fall so why would they exactly, plus everyone likes playing dvds. In game graphics looking bad ? most of these titles come alive in motion , and Perfect dark zero could be fingered with the .. its 30% complete card or something, but that one in particular is a bit of a stretch. And the BC thing? very tricky, has shown by this forum most people seem to want it 100% effective or not there at all so MS is appealing to a non existant audience by doing this.. apparently. Personally any BC would be appreciated by me, but 100% BC would convince me to buy it at launch.. moreso then now atleast.

Nintendo, so many of you are shooting their name off so easily but what damage do they have to control ? there isn't any really , sure call their presentation dissapointing if you must but everything they've revealed will make them money without really annoying anyone. Damage control worthy - no, boring? Extremly

I would say MS as they seeminly laid it out on the line and the line was pretty bare.

The sad thing is Sony really should be under heat, but neither MS or Nintendo did anything to press them. Sony, seemingly came out and said.. eh, let's just go ahead and repeat last generation again kthnx.

From what we've seen MS did nothing that is going to change that either. Sony doesn't seem like it will have a service that can match anything close to XBL, and they didn't include a standard HDD (which I would have loved). The Cell apparently isn't going to produce real life holographic images while baking pies and washing your dishes.

Basically Sony just came out and said we have all the third parties.. fuck off. heh. I predict barring something dramatic changing that Sony will win next gen. by possibly a larger margin than this gen.

PS3 bitchslaps XBox 360. XBox games look bad, it's over powered in every way by PS3 and it gets HDerawned big time.

Revolution: remains to be seen.

Looks like it might gameover(or BSOD) for MS.
