Which (original) PS2 model should I go after?

Almost six years after its release, I'm finally ready to take the plunge and get a PS2. :lol However, I much prefer the original, bulkier model, so I guess I have no choice but to get a used one. So, which serial number(s) should I check out for/avoid? (Is there a particular model that has a much better reputation (less noisy, less DRE prone, etc.) than the others?)

The 5000 model is the one you want if you need a HDD-enabled PS2.

Otherwise, go with the slim model. Improved all around (except for no HDD capability).

Get a satin silver one. That one is from the most recent 'bulky' generation of the PS2. There are black ones in that revision too btw. The model number should be something like ehrmm...SCPH-50004. At least in Europe it is that revision, dunno about a difference with the US. It's VERY silent and doesn't have any of the disc/laser problems of some of the older models.

any model with 5004 series. they were the latest from the old model.

however if you want my advise. get slim one. way way way much better and no stupid crap shit like DRE or lock ups.

In contrast to some of these opinions...50001 model. I'll take the bulkier PS2+HDD+HD Loader over the slim model anyday, and the 50001 has been rock solid as far as reliability goes.

Can't imagine playing some games from the PS2 lineup without HD loader now...

The loader is the shit. Being able to run a game with 90% less loading is awesome and it doesn't use the laser, so that will hopefully make your PS2 last a lot longer.

Someone who has repaired thousands of (original model) PS2s just told me that the SCPH 39001 model was by far the most reliable of the bunch. Anyhow, I'll be hunting for a 39001 or 50001 (hopefully I'll manage to nab one that's not too beat down...:)) (Btw, I don't really care for the HD.)

Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.

on ps2 can you play import games from japan straight out of the box or do you need to chip it?

my friend's ps2 that i play has a chip and i've never tried a console that isn't chipped and i want to buy a ps2 soon. but it's absolutely essential to play the japanese obscure shooters!
