You should split the 90's... the first 1/2 was grimey the last 1/2 was bling bling

00's was the Neptunes era

early/mid ninties. Nas, Pac, Biggie, Snoop Dre, Ice Cube, Beasty Boys, Easy E, Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Run DMC. Man that was a great era (at their best)

early 90s

late 80's/early 90's.

Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Boogie Down Productions, Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, A Tribe Called Quest, Poor Righteous Teachers, Lord Finesse, Black Sheep, Showbiz & AG, Chi Ali, etc etc etc = heaven

If you're talking stuff on the radio/MTV you can put a big tombstone in the ground in the late-90s. Other than that since the genre keeps growing there's plenty of good stuff from every era if you know how to dig.

I do miss free sampling though.

90's. 00's has been THE worst decade for hip-hop and rap ever. The commercialization-MTVization of hip-hop has become its doom imo. I gave up on hip-hop and rap in 2003-2004 and since then I've been treating it like pop music: I like some songs I listen to them but I don't really care about it.

the 90's had great hiphop on wax from mainstream to underground.

Early 90's, through when Biggie died in early '97. Sounds cliche, but things in hip-hop really did seem to go way downhill after 2Pac and Biggie got shot. For me anyway...

Nothing can compare to the period from around 90 to 96. Mannnn, that was great. Bone Thugs at their prime, Pac at his prime, Biggie, etc. And even your gimmick, one hit wonder rappers were much more interesting than the "I'm so icy and I'm getting drunk at the club" assholes that are being put on these days. Anybody remember Cee Lo - I wish I was a little bit taller and Ahmad - Back in the Day?

Tupac alone makes the early 90's the winne.r not even concidering everyone else like dre and biggie.

Nas, Biggie, and Outkast's debuts dropped in 94. I like more from that era than this. I like Kanye and Saigon the most now. Jigga is my fav of all time, but he's a guest spot person now

'93 cutoff is too early, you lose stuff like Illmatic and a lot of classic Death Row, Biggie, Tupac works as well.

Sorry, that's when I think Rap jumped the shark. Just personal opinion .. don't hate me.

'88-'94 is my personal favorite era for hip-hop music.

'88 was the year when so many great hip-hop albums dropped in a span of a few months that it was ridiculous. Greatest year ever for hip-hop to this day in my opinion.

'94 was almost the same as '88 with its own flurry of great albums but just falls short with the number of classics.

And of course there were a few great albums that dropped during the years in-between.

95-99 for moi

Wu-Tang Forever
Mobb Deep - The Infamous
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Ghost - Ironman
ODB - Return to the 36 Chambers
GZA - Liquid Swords
Big L - Lifestylez Ov Da Poor and Dangerous
AZ - Doe or Die
Biggie - Life After Death
Redman - Muddy Waters
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Big Pun - Capital Punishment
Outkast - Aquemini
Eminem - The Slim Shady LP
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt

This is shit I can remember off the top of my head, so I may have misjudged some albums in regards to their releases - and I'm going off my own CD collection, so there's shit piles of others, but I can't be bothered to find em all.

I'm going to agree with this. I look at the mid to late 90s as sort of a wasteland except for a couple gems [e.g. Mobb Deep, Wu Tang, Big L, UK stuff like Ruf Beats]. Then when things like Dr. Octagon, DJ Shadow, Latyrx, the Bomb "Return of the DJ" comps and Company Flow started coming out it kick-started independent hip hop while the mainstream kept getting worse.

I still think that "Deep Cover" is the best record Death Row ever made.
