Which should I buy, "The Suffering" or "Mercenaries"

For reference, I don't have an Xbox, so please also let me know if the PS2 versions of these games were "lacking".

I havent brought a new game since RE4 and I'm thinking about getting a new one. Something either action or adventure oriented for PC, GC or PS2. Lately I have thought about the two games in my thread title. If there are others, or if you have any thoughts in general of what would make a good action/adventure game to buy for the above platform. Please, give me a shout. :)

I won't speak for Mercenaries since I've barely played it, and there was a huge thread about it when it came out with seemingly overwhelming positive impressions.

But I did finish and enjoy The Suffering (on Xbox). The easiest way to put it is think Silent Hill without the puzzles, just going room-to-room blasting things.

Lots of blood, lots of gruesome images like guards tied up to poles and being impaled and prisoners strapped down on operating tables with syringes stuck in them, lots of creepy SH type monsters.

Oh and lots of swearing.

I really enjoyed it's straightforward, simple game design - didn't have to ponder too much while playing it. Just run 'n gun.

It's 19.99 pretty much everywhere so it can be had for cheap.

While the Suffering was a decent game, Mercenaries was an example of GOOD GAMEPLAY DESIGN and showed that the GTA formula could be done bigger and better by someone that wasn't Rockstar.

Mercenaries got an A from Gaming-Age! AN A, MAN.

Haven't played Mercenaries but I want to put a +1 in for The Suffering. It also comes with a cool doumentary on a haunted prison.

The Suffering is pretty decent. No major flaws imo. The atmosphere of the game is interesting and it could be a nice buy at bargain price.

Mercenaries i didn't dig it at all. I stay on a personal level here because the majority of people like the game. To me it's a poorly made GTA with the popular war games skin.
If you like the theme maybe you should buy it (and also if you don't care about even worse controls and physics than GTA). If not, buy GTASA or whatever.

I'll put my vote in for Mecenaries. It's an excellent spin on the GTA style of play, and does not suffer worse controls or physics. At least not on the Xbox. It's a great game, tons to do. Lots of variety, plenty to explore and find, a lot of cool vehicles, and you can destroy everything. Everything! Great game. I can't recommend it enough.

The Suffering was a decent romp that uses scripted events and "corner of the eye" trickery to good effect for the first half of the game but coasts the rest of the way.

I only played through the first suit in Mercernaries and it didn't generate enough interest to keep me going. Action was decent when it got going - stuff blows up real good and the tanks have just the right feel of lumbering power - but there were too many lulls (always having to travel to a faction's HQ to get new orders) and the setting and cannon fodder ultimately were just too drab and nondistinct.

i like both of these games a lot. but i would choose mercenaries first. infact, mercenaries is arguably game of the year so far in 2005. i would personally give the nod to RE 4 but you can't blame anyone who says mercenaries is tops. everything about it is fantastic. the graphics are nice (on xbox, dont know about ps2), the gameplay is awesome, and the xbox version has
luke skywalker i think!
as a hidden character!

suffering actually scared the crap out of me. you should buy both since suffering can be had for about $10 used.

i played part of the suffering and it was only okay. i got bored with it and stopped and took it back to the rental store. but mercenaries is awesome! my boyfriend played through it and i watched some and thought- eh, no big whoop. looks kind of boring. but he got me to play and i put ffVIII down to keep playing it- that's how much fun it is. i'll even go with the GTA comparision and say- it's even more fun than GTA in regards to running around and exploring- because i get to BLOW THINGS UP and get paid for it. definitely mercs.

Both vers have
Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones
as hidden characters, with the same methods of unlocking both--however, the requirements are flipped for the seperate versions.

Same here

If the only options are The Suffering and Mercenaries then I'd naturally reccomend you Mercenaries.

Of course that depends on the price you can get either game for and what style of gameplay you're currently craving. One is a free-roaming action game with tons of different vehicles and the other is an action survival horror with a very dark theme.

Well I passed up Mercenaries after playing a little bit of it at Best Buy and coming away not too interested, but still didn't find Suffering. So I got home and just ordered it off of ebay and wound up paying about 15 bucks for it.

I haven't played the Suffering, but I have Mercs for the PS2 and it's absolutely great. Really great.

And, I believe Han Solo and Indy Jones are the hidden characters, not Luke Skywalker.

Han, not Luke. Take away my Jedi card immediately, sirs!
