White Noise

Nymphae

Recently I've been using these 10 hour rainfall recordings that I ripped from Youtube, it's really been helping me sleep. This is the one I like:

I like to use these two websites for various sound masking functions:

Mynoise.net

A crazy amount of soundscapes for you to play with. Each one has EQ sliders that allow you just adjust the sounds. You can purchase audio file downloads that have your settings from the website. Sometimes I'm in the mood for space station background noises, most of the time however I just want Speech Jamming and Ocean Waves.

Noises.online

Made by the Mynoise people, it's basically just a mixer board for a lot of the sounds from their main site. It's meant to be simpler to control and less confusing for the average person (mynoise.net is an awkward site sometimes)

Anyone else have any other good white noise resources?

The same sort of thing really (been around a while), they do a phone app as well, and Chrome/chromium extension. You can pay $10 a month for the pro version and unlock a bunch of extras, but tbh that seems kind of absurd given it's a bunch of sound loops, though I dare say that there are some whales out there who are happy to burn that kind of cash. Should just as for a one off unlock free imho. Still you can save your sound mixes and it works pretty well.

Slightly unrelated but never the less. I've been using Zero a free Fasting app for a while, but the same developers also created a meditation app called Oak . Its been available on IOS for a while, but recently made the jump to Android. It's free (though you can pay a one-off $5 and unlock some specific guided meditations), but what I like about it is it not only does basic meditations but it also does nice specific breathing exercises, as well as some sleep stuff.

I also use this one at work, Noizio, but less now that I've found the Mynoise stuff. Some might prefer having a desktop app with menubar controls. Also a pretty decent selection of noises.

I've been using a box fan for years, keeps out 99% of the noise. Every now and then I have to go on youtube and click a 12 hour white noise video that I can turn up with my speakers/sub woofer if it gets too loud.

I was using a Lectrofan at home previously:

Has 10 different fan sounds and 10 white noise levels of varying frequencies.

I also purchased a Marpac Dohm before the Lectrofan as it was very highly recommended by some sleep organization, it's a cool device but the volume is too low and there isn't enough adjustment options.

Fucking still with the region locking SNL? I don't understand how there can be deals in place preventing them from airing their own content on their own youtube channel, in countries where the show is available, ie Canada.

I use that same top one. I need it to sleep. I honestly can't sleep without it anymore. During the summer I just use the AC for white noise.

I absolutely can't sleep without a fan sound, I had no idea these existed. Will give them a look for sure.

Worked 12-hour night shifts one job. Never got enough sleep.

For my lunch break, sometimes id get a snack, go to my car, eat and then take a 35 minute nap while listening to a wheat field or seaside or something.

.....not good times man, not good times

Yeah, I use these to help me sleep when my tinnitus starts getting to me.

They're very helpful.

You guys crazy.
I sleep in the quiet. No sound = sleep.

The problem people have is NOT being able to get no sound. So you will have noises particularly in higher density living and urban spaces that punctuate the silence and disturb your sleep pattern and can even make it harder to fall asleep. What white noise does is have a low repetitive sound that your brain will block out but it also masks the other sounds that happen around you meaning those sounds need to be much louder to be heard over the white noise that your brain is blocking out.

I've got a couple of Amazon bought white noise generators. Unfortunately the white noise is not as clean as they should be so end up hearing repeating elements in the sound (and the other sounds are laughably bad). Not that I didn't get used to it but a bit annoying when random phone apps and YouTube videos are better. The next one I buy will have support for custom sounds.

I do also like listening to rain or waves videos but only for napping not for sleep (and videos of nature, virtual tourism, etc to calm down before sleep). For me it's better to have featureless sound during sleep.

These are the best. Price is a little steeper than the others, but well worth it.

Yes, probably my second favourite Delillo novel. After the underappreciated End Zone. If you liked White Noise I definitely recommend it.

What did you like about it compared to others? I found the lectrofan not only better in terms of volume and options, but the cheaper choice as well.

I think I liked it better because it sounds closer to a fan and a more natural noise, if that makes sense. The ones I've purchased in the past from Amazon and Bed Bath & Beyond sound like they're coming out of a shitty speaker.

Sure, because it actually does contain moving inner mechanisms that create the sound rather than a digital file. Personally I really don't seem to notice much of a difference in effect between the digital files and a mechanical fan, but I feel you.
