The image of jesus probably originates even after the 4th century. St.Augustine(4th century) said that no one knows what jesus looked like. To paraphrase, he says, some say he looked very ugly and others say he was very good looking. Either way its clear there was no canonical image of Jesus at the time.

.. at least not in the Western half of the Church!

(Okay, the Eastern half didn't have a canonical one, but they did have a tradition in place. Now I wish I had that icon...grrrr.)

Not just the sphinx, but Sphinxes:

These are just the first 2 of many examples I found with a quick google search.

Pharoahs quite often looted the tombs, pyramids and statues of other pharoahs to make their own. For example many pyramids origianally had a smooth alabaster surface, rather than block steps, but the pieces of alabaster were swiped to make statues and such.

I'm pretty sure the noses were taken because they were the easiest protuberance to chip off an build something else out of.

Also, isn't there an old myth about Napoleon blasting the nose off of the Sphinx at Giza?

:lol ok. don't lump me in with those christian fuckwits, guy... makes you sound as dumb as they do. i was wrong on the carbon dating... last I saw on discovery channel they said it was 1st century. my bad, people!

well, there it was involved with a fire in the 14th century, and some say that's where the date comes from. somehow a holy monk man saved it from doom, however, and then he get back to drinking his quarts of sin.

I recall hearing that the ancient Egyptians believed that if the sarcophagus of a mummy was disfigured, its soul was unable to cross over to the afterlife. Superstitious grave robbers broke the noses off of tombs so the owner couldn't get revenge on them from the other side for looting them.

It's a universal phenomenon. You think Siddhartha Gautama really looked Chinese like in the statues :lol ? I don't see why white Jesus is something to get all upset about.

when a woman and a tribal deity love one another very much, sometimes they conceive immaculately and produce a little baby messiah!

i seem to remember a documentary that said there's a bateria on the shard that caused carbon dating to be inaccurate.

need to dig that information up, though..
