Who feels guilty that their parents help them? [college in general]

I'm starting to feel very guilty that my parents are spending so many thousands, and probably their retirement, to send my sister and I through school. Have you do you feel this way about your folks? I'm worried about my parents' helth, among other things. I can't wait until I can fend for myself in a carreer of my choosing. I feel guilty for having that choice when there was no possible way for my parents to go to schoo. The best thing I can do is to finish as soon as I possibly can and have something to show for it. It's going to feel like their degree just as much as mine.
Do you feel like I do? I'd like to know.

I dont but primarily because they're not spending a whole bunch on me due to Florida Bright Futures. I'm moving back home for a few years after I get out though to save some money also.

A little bit, but then I remember how much they COULD be paying, without the scholarships I earned. I mainly feel guilty about blowing my monthly checking deposit on crap I don't need--this month it was HL2, various DVDs, dinner w/ my girlfriend, and before I know it, I'm broke.

Also the fact that I'm working on a major that will likely pay me jack shit (English).

Yea, all the time. The worst thing is I can't seem to find a part-time job anywhere in this town (I'm always on the look out), due to it being small, and there being a lot more qualified than I job seekers in town. Thus, I am totally reliant on the parents all the time. My sister started college this year too and now my parents are by themselves at home. I'm always worried about them being stressed out over everything.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
My parents, particularly my mom fucked with my life in highschool which also ruined college for me, and those are years I'll never have back. So I don't really give a shit.

I would only feel guilty is I was failing school, or working towards a useless degree. Thats like a kid who crashes his new beamer daddy bought him.

the more poor you get the more you learn to take help where you can get it, and work off the guilt later by doing the same for others.

If you take care of your parents when they get old and /or sick, I'm sure it will have been a good investment on their part. That and your parents no doubt want you to have what they could not because parents have a tendancy to love their children, often more than themselves. Bringing a life into the world just does that to you (no kids of my own yet, but plenty of nieces and nephews as well as plans to create life in a few years).

...working towards a useless degree.

I feel like the technology my degree is based on might be in danger of being outclassed by newer, more automated, easier-to-do graphics manipulation by people younger than me and outsourcing, but I know there will always be enough work for me somewhere. I'm sure I'll get to work in my home state--maybe just not close to home where my parents and the rest of my family live.

KingGondo, that was my major. I thought I could use the training for learning good character development, but I made it my minor and went chasing after yet (then) unnamed sciences. However, a friend of mine that's crashing on my couch four times a week is getting his masters in English. He's one of the most articulate, interesting, eccentric, and well-rounded people I know. Literature has a lot to teach us if we're willing to let it. I always had some lofty goal in mind to keep me interested in reading about human experience through fiction.

MAF, you're right. Pay it forward. I'm thinking of all the people I can help when I get established. Maybe I'll be one of those world-famous photographers that speak to our classes and teach seminars, or maybe I'll just get all that time I don't get to spend with my family now back for better times spent with them later. I am an uncle now, as of august, and I have a new person to pay attention to. My mother helps people all the time fill out forms, all kinds of paperwork, and whatever else she can do to help people. I was brought up to be a well-behaved, helping kind-of guy, and I can tell all the good things that my parents do for people I'll end up doing later in my life.

I'm really hoping to take care of my parents later in life, at least to the point that we can all go relax together on real family vacations, hunting trips, or anything that lets us all hang out and spend quality time together. I'm just concerned for my parents' health now because they always seem tired...look tired...feel tired. That's all they do is work, and they don't drink or smoke. They each have their own jobs, plus they run our family business. I just think they work too much, and I'm concerned about them.

Diomedeskun, I agree with you, too.

Scholarships! w00t!

But if my parents had to pay my way through school, I wouldn't feel guilty because they're supposed to (to some extent) pay for their child's secondary-education.

I'd be obligated to pay for my child's college education and I wouldn't expect them to feel "guilty" about it.

1. Don't feel guilty
2. Make the most out of the education they help pay for
3. Take care of them if/when they need you to down the road

If people on this board got a dollar for everytime you say that, they could pay for their schooling themselves.

I don't feel guilty now. I am in highschool and my dads company pays for my schoolfees, however, when I get to Uni it will be different. My dad wants me to do Uni in England but it costs a lot of money in there, especially if you are not a home student. i lived in England for 12 years and have a British Passport, I just hope that qualifies me as a home student, it would be so much easier for my parents.

Take care of them when they no longer can take care of themselves when/if they get to that point. That's IMO one of the best ways you can show your support and love for any sacrifices they've made over the years for you.

I don't feel guilty, I just feel stupid for not trying harder to sever those financial ties and become more financially independent. Because now, it's starting to bite me on the ass a bit, and I'm struggling to play "catch up" with my peers.

I was fine with it when i thought they could afford it but I havent taken a penny from my parents since my dad lost his job last year, they give me cheques (tution and stuff) but i just rip em up or let 'em rot in my wallet because i cant bring myself to pay 'em in. Thing is i dont think they are that hard up still, my mum has a great job and they are flying off to Goa this christmas (leaving me home alone i might add, expect an "im all alone on christmas day" post from me) but i still cant bring myself to ask them for anything for christmas or my birthday that follows in january. I guess i should really make the most of it while they are prepared to give me money, i really want that new PC too....*sigh* guess i'll just ask for MORE overtime.
