Who has a pony?

So I was talking to my best girl friend yesterday. We were talking about New Years and how people are going to be looking to hook up and we're gonna be on the prowl. As she often does she tried to convince me to cut my hair. She's talking about how most girls don't like guys with long hair. I have a pony tail and I love it when its down and have no intention of cutting it. Part of her reasoning, she said, was that girls don't like when guys have better hair then they do and apparently I have very nice hair (I don't do anything special to it...)

I guess my question is, how many of you guys out there have ponytails and what are the typical female reactions to them? I've had mind for about a year, plus the long hair while it was growing in. I haven't really had a hard time finding chicks, I'm not exactly a stud, but I have not seen any real drop off of hook-ups/metting people, but I have had other (female) friends tell me that short hair is better too. Any opnions?

Not to classify you as white trash/redneck, but thats the first thing I think of when I think guy with pony tail. Could be what women think too.

My hair is currenty out of control in all directions, need to get it trimmed

they call me "Man Gravy".
well, I don't, and I don't know any guys that do either. I think it's a societal thing. Women want men to be masculine, and having short hair is perceived to be a masculine thing. Long hair is perceived as somewhat feminine, especially if it's up in a pony tail. I notice that, while in general women might prefer men with short hair, it doesn't stop them from fawning over guys like Owen Wilson.

[Cubsfan] Be Cocky and Funny about having better hair than the women around you. They'll be impressed and intrigued by your confidence. You might want to thrust your pelvis at them too a couple of times while being Cocky and Funny.[/Cubsfan]

[Azala]Different people like different things, ask the person you're going out with about how they feel about your hair. Consider cutting your hair as a 'gift' to the person. It'll make her happy that you care about what she thinks, but don't expect anything in return, then it wouldn't be a gift[/Azala]

When she comes home one day she can be greeted by you with tree trimmers in your hands as you maul your hair. Meanwhile you can scream 'THIS IS ALL FOR YOU MY LOVE! A GIFt!' with tears streaming down your face in some sort of horrified joy.

Haha, no worries. I live in the middle of suburbia though, don't really have many rednecks around here. I feel the way you do about mullets, however.

Haha, I'll have to try the pelvis thrust. I'm not currently dating anyone, but I have thought about if/when I am in another real relationship that I could cut it if she doesn't like it, but that would have to be a serious relationship and I am currently enjoying my string of random hook ups. Though to listen to Megs (my friend) my long hair is part of the reason I am lacking a signifiganr other.

As for the societal thing, it totally is, but I see guys with pony's who have girlfriends so I'm not losing hope or anything. Was just wondering if anyone else had expeinces like this.

Since you wouldn't want to be with these lame females to begin with, why change your hair at all?

I'm not going to :p I like it and that's what matters to me, I was just curious to other people's opnions. If you're a girl and you don't like my hair, well, too bad. No sweet sweet lovin' for you :D

I was thinking more:

As for the hair, keep it until it starts destroying consumer electronics, then shave it all off and grow a beard.

Well, it worked for me.

Maybe the reason you're only "friends" with Megs is because of your long hair? Maybe it's a hint "i won't fuck you till you loose the chick hair.

Very possible and a thought that has crossed my mind on more then one occasion, but we've been in a brother/sister type realtionship for so long it'd be weird and I'm not cutting my hair for some awkward cuddling.

What is it with geeks and pony tails? Particularly overweight geeks. C'mon man, it's not helping. And you don't look like The Highlander...

Yeah, i have a ponytail. But i'm asian, so it looks gangsta...
Most girls like it, some don't. Sometimes i ponder, "Hmmm, i might shave my head," and they're all like, "Nooooo! :("
It's hard being a gangsta... *sigh*

This is the first thing I think of too.

It's like a nerd thinks "Hmm, I'm homely and overweight... how can I make myself even more repulsive? Oh, I'll grow my hair out and put it in a straggly, greasy ponytail!"

Well, I'm not overweight so no worries there. Its more of a hippie thing then a geek thing.

Besides, Highlander?? If I was trying to look like a dork icon there are sooo much better pony's out there.

:lol Well you had the first part sort of right. It's a balance between what you want and what your partner wants (or the type of girl you want) and how far you are willing to bend. You don't want to be resentful, and you do want to be yourself; but you also want to feel attractive. What are your thoughts on your hair?

Ponytails can turn me off personally when they start to look ratty, dirty, unwashed or unkept. Whatever the hair, it has to be well cared for. I do like longer than normal hair, maybe not quite ponytail length though. I like seeing the hair fall around the face (something to play with, and the way it looks), so wearing it back defeats the purpose. Ear to shoulder length for me.

This is very true. If I go a couple days without washing it, my hair get fairly ugly. I was thinking of getting a trim to shoulder length, cause I like that look too. I also like wearing my hair down, but with it this long (about 2 inches below shoulder) it curls up and looks nice, but is impractical/always getting in the way.

On a side note: Atomsk, I love your avatar, the surprised look on the nurse's face makes me smile every time I see it :D

See that's one of the biggest problems with ponytails. They can rub against shirt collars and end up looking ratty by the days end (varying with how long since it's been washed, hair type and personal care). My hair is down past my waist, and I end up brushing it a few times a day to keep it looking nice. If it wasn't so baby fine I'm sure I'd end up with serious knots. However, on me, I just don't do short hair.

I think you're onto the right idea though, as long as you're comfortable with whatever decision you make.

Atomsk> I think you skipped a lot of middle ground on that one, and with it the benefits.

i had it shoulder length for awhile.

honestly, it still feels wierd not having all that weight on my head

then again, the main reasons for cutting it had to do with serious job searching, and not females.

I usually let my hair grow out during the winter months. It makes a nice difference when its cold outside.

I had it going going a little past shoulder length at one point, but I got tired of my gf nagging me to get a haircut. I found it annoying to maintain (drying the beast would take 15 minutes compared to 30seconds when it's short) but worth it.

Most girls that I know are turned off by ponytails. But that might be that the type of guy who would actually have a ponytail tends to be strange (no offense intended).

If you want sexy long hair, imitate Jim Carrey:

Haha, shit. It's funny that several of us thought of the same thing when reading the thread title.
