I have my new parts in the mail (Athlon X2 4200+, Foxconn nForce4 Ultra board, Gigabyte fan-less x800XL). I didn't order the HTPC case and accessories (wireless mouse and keyboard, etc) but occassionally I would be curious to hook this up to one of my HDTVs (Mits 55819 and Sony KV32HS510).

Does anyone have their PC hooked up to their HDTV? What resolution do you run it at? Particularly anyone who is running their PC interlaced to a CRT.. also how hefty is your rig and what kind of resolutions can/do you run games in?

I have an all-in-wonder 9800 pro and I hook it up to my HDTV once in a while using DVI.

I use 1280*768 since it's its native resolution, and it looks really, really good.
So good actually, that I wonder why LCD computer monitors are so expensive, and my 32" LCD (that looks just like a computer monitor when connected to a PC), is relatively cheap.

Your HDTV's native res: 1280*768

A (Dell) 24" LCD monitor (widescreen) native res: 1920*1200. So.. 1080p and beyond.

That's why :D

I hooked my mom's laptop up to their new 50 inch Panasonic DLP TV. I used the vga output, and it looks great. I'm running it in the highest resolution it will do I think. I haven't played any games on it, but it looks fantastic for browsing the net and that sort of thing. Many HDTV's don't support PC input, so if you're looking at buying a TV and just assuming things will look good, that might not be a good idea. I'm not an expert on hooking computers to televisions, I'm just telling ya what I did. :)

so no CRTs so far, huh?

are you guys all hooking them up through DVI? I saw one say he did VGA, did you use PowerStrip to get syncs right or did it "just work"?

Radeon 9200 to mitsubish 48413 through DVI. Main resolution for movies/tv,etc is 1700x1000 or so (no powerstrip, all through catalyst control center). Used to run some desktop stuff at 960x540 (or less to cutoff overscan). TV does not support 720p, so those were best I could get. No games for me.

If your mits does not have VGA or DVI, you might be able to hook it up through RGBHV, but honestly, I tried that and never had much luck for some reason. Used powerstrip, etc. Maybe it would be easier for you on nvidia

well, my system will be here today. before I nuzzle it into it's final resting spot I'll throw my component cables from my xbox onto my computer and check it out on my TV.. how convenient that is will determine how often I use my TV for my computer.

though on AVS forum I found ALL the timing info for my Mits WS55819 I could have ever wanted. Looks like my TV and the card should be able to support my TV's highest rezzes (1920x540p and 1920x1080i).

sometimes I hook up my laptop, but only to watch fansubs.

actually I have watched fansubs with my XBox and XBMC. That is what I watch all my downloaded videos with. XBox is pretty much the same as a PC, so that isn't/wasn't a big motivator. Also XBMC does 1920x1080i just fine so everything was scaled to HD. About the only thing XBMC couldn't do was HD video which it did all right with sometimes but stuttered with terribly other times.

This will mainly be for gaming. I can't see a need to replace XBMC anytime soon. Unless of course I turn this into a fullblown HTPC (case and wireless) in which case the xbox is gone (and I mean gone. haven't played a game on it in 2 years).

I've got the 2nd output from my geforce 6600 hooked up to my DLP TV via DVI to watch some HDTV movies and series.
Great stuff, but still way more annoying than just booting the Xbox and watching fansubs directly via component. If only it had a 3ghz processor... *drool*

I don't have a modded Xbox, so if I want to watch fansubs on the big screen I have to use HMDI and my laptop.

Not much trouble, now I have the 2 cables tucked snugly behind the couch, when it is fansub time I just hook them up and I am set.

I have a PC hooked up to my LCD, looks wondeful, playing Half-Life II and Doom III on it is amazing!! Emus, surfing and HD movies round out the package. GAF on 50" is godly :D

No, but I do HDMI to CRT for PC stuff @ 1280x720.
yeah, the bedroom TV has DVI-D.. but a 32" screen vs. my 21" Sony Trinitron isn't that big of a deal. well, ok, maybe it is, but doing widescreen on a 55" is a much bigger deal. :) Though if I happen to have any DVI-I cables laying around I will probably give a shot at hooking it up the bedroom 32".

well, for now I hooked up the PC temporarily in the bed room just to test it out. Worked like a charm. even got the BIOS screens on the TV and I didn't have to do a single thing before the first time I hooked it up. 1920x1080 is a FUCKING BITCH to read with small fonts, and I'm too lazy to insert the disc to install the large fonts. but again, this is on the 32" screen. don't know how it will be on the 55". really bummed now that the 55" doesn't support 720p. would probably accomodate the desktop better.

also battlefield 2 is just freaking gorgeous. 1280x720 with 4x AA and 16xAF. I really can't believe how good it looks. next-gen HD gaming is here. again though, playing it on the 55" should prove to be a bummer. have a feeling the game isn't going to run as great forced into 1080. though maybe if I played with sidebars at 1440x1080.. who knows.

and GAF has never looked as good as it does at larger than 21". :P though I certainly regret now not getting the HTPC case. yeah it would have been around $300 total extra for everything, but I could have retired my xbox once and for all. MAME and fansubs are just gorgeous.

just hooked it up to the living room TV. 1080i on the 55" Mits is goegroues. I mean gerogeous enough that I would almost use that as my permanent display. The interlacing was only really noticeable in a few instances, and none of them involved actual windows or text (wait, one of them was text). otherwise interlacing was a non-issue. the only real issues I had were that I had to drop battlefield 2 down to 2x AA because the card just couldn't put out a decent framerate at 1920x1080 with 4x AA (x800XL), and Quicktime wouldn't play HD trailers very well scaled to 1080i (again framerate). Quicktime has to be because it is still beta because windows on the otherhand played 1080p stuff just fine at full res.

Still, until I get an HTPC case and wireless accessories, I will have my computer in a typical desktop environment.. hopefully by this fall.

I've got an RCA 39" CRT HDTV and I'm running my HTPC through it. It looks fabulous and although I wish it had more resolution options (480 i/p, 1080i), I'm still very happy with it. I use it mostly for DVD upscaling using a combination of TheaterTek, ReClock, and Powerstrip...movies look outstanding. My TV only accepts component cables so I have to overwrite the macrovision protection with a small program called DVDidle...works like a charm.

BTW, if your looking to watch movies on it, I highly recommend an older version of TheaterTek with your videocard. The newer version of their software uses Nvidia decoders and it makes movies on ATI cards look like shit (I don't care what TheaterTek says, I tried it on my 9700pro and all the colors were washed out and it even made it seem like there were convergence errors.../rant). Older version used Sonic decoders which took advantage of ATI's cards.
