Basketball had Micheal Jordan, literature had Shakesphere, Tennis had the Willaims sisters, Baseball had Babe Ruth, so on etc. In every field there has been at some point been someone who was extremely good at it. In the field of programming/coding, who is/was the Micheal Jordan that could dunk from the foul line? :D

two people from Moscow are regarded as the best programmers in the world. Can't remember their names....

But the best computer scientist in the world in recent times might be the dutch professor djikstra? dunno.

This guy is the win only on the fact that I can understand more of what spews from Carmack's mouth then the shit that comes from his.

Anyway, I know a little bit behind the story of this company. The brothers who started this company, also started the custom software shop I worked at - he left when he sold it for hundreds of millions. I saw it grow from under a hundred up to 600 or so at one point.

I learned a good amount, but you kinda have to when you work 70 hours a week - at least we got paid very well and by the hour.

He was a big supporter of programmers (himself being one) and was adamant about hiring the best. At one point, 75% of new hires didn't make it through training.

I still think Carmack is the best all-around programmer I know of - 3D/graphics, networking, gameplay, multilanguages, multi-OS, etc. Some are super-smart and some are hard-working but very few are a combination of the two like him.

And my school (UT) had him. He was a crazy egotistical guy.

If you go ask around topcoder, Tomek is da man. He didn't win last time around but he's always up there and sometimes crushes the (not too shabby) opposition.

In the real world though, it's probably Carmack, Knuth or more likely some guy nobody has ever heard of. It also largely depends on what the definition of "coding" is.
