connect this baby to you hd tv
built in hd, wifi, bluetooth

easy streaming of files from your base computer and with the cost of a new xbox, larger hd, and mod chips its almost the same price. (its less but all the additions kick ass)

wasnt impressed with the ipod flash but this thing has home media center written all over it

"built in hd, wifi, bluetooth"

BZZZZT. Try again.

Wifi and Bluetooth cost extra. ($50 for Wifi, $79 for WiFi/Bluetooth)

How are you going to "connect this baby to your TV" when there is only VGA and DVI out? Unless you own a TV that accepts those, there is going to have to be another convertor somewhere in the middle.

Costs over 2-3x as much as a modded Xbox....and the selection of emulators would probably be worse.

People with a history of buying sexy looking hardware also have sexy looking HDTV's with appropriate inputs.

But hey, according to apple.com:

"And when you want to take a break, play the 3D games Nanosaur 2 and Marble Blast Gold."

STATE OF THE ART TECH!

A media center product is what Apple SHOULD have done.

I'm not seeing the appeal of this thing. The Ipod flash unit is lame as well.

Not to mention the NV2X in the xbox is at least twice as fast as that lame ATI Radeon 9200 they have in there.

yeah apple kinda screwed the pooch on this one. not having a video out sucks if they really wanted this to be a 'media center' type device.

It sure looks purrdy, but coming to actual usefulness......stupid Apple. Try both looks and functionality then maybe we'll see.

its not meant to be a media center device, its meant to be a cheap 500 dollar mac for the common person.

ipod became so popular people became willing to try out mac but the cheif complaint was that it was too expensive as most macs are high end only. so they decided to make a budget one to compete with dell and such.

i was merely suggesting an alternate use.

The mac mini looks hot actually..

do they sell these minus fancy screen to save some cash?

I really want an iBook, something similar or something like this.

so basically... that thing is like buying a shit used PC that's basically only good as an internet station, but instead of getting a PC and getting some utility out of it, you're instanty f*** because it's not only a mac, but a pretty outdated one at that...

"its not meant to be a media center device, its meant to be a cheap 500 dollar mac for the common person. "

the "common person" can surely get a better value from Dell, Compaq or HP.

No N64 emu for Mac. No support for TurboGrafx CDs either =(

(at least according to that page)

Xbox does both, I believe...

The iLife suite of software nearly makes this worth the price right out of the box. I'm considering getting one just to use iMovie and iDVD with my digital video camera for movie editing. The Mac Mini was never intended to be a Media Center device, but it sure gets Apple back into the game as cheap computer manufacturer. Couple this with the iPod and they have a nice little multi-media station. I'll bet it sells a ton.

You must mean video in because it has video out in DVI/VGA and an adapter to go to SVideo or composite.

id say it is pretty cool for a network/email/internet surfing PC.
media center, no.

I didn't see that.

Wouldn't say 'no', but would say that it might not be the best choice unless you plan to do some work.

Out of the box if you wanted to play media to an HDTV and have a receiver - it will work as is. If you need to capture you need to pick up one of the external video capture boards, preferably one of the new HDTV ones.

Apple should contract their design team out to various companies, nobody beats them for style and appearance.

no thanks! I'll get an Xbox Next instead. maybe even an Xbox Next PC.

Mac mini? thumbs down.

I'll wait until XBox Next is modded and I can run Linux/OSX on it. Since its PPC based and not x86 based I think the options for XBox Next will looks a whole lot like what's available on OSX :)

Well, as a computer hardware illiterate, this might solve my quest for HTPC situation. I was thinking about modding my Xbox for XBMC - but whole FTPing and getting Bios and all is scaring me off for more or less "windowed" format. I was also looking into HTPCs too.

What I'm looking is a PC which takes my DVD-/+R which has various media files (AVI/MP4 animes mostly) and play off on my TV in full 16x9 via either DVI or Component, with Korean subtitles in .smi format. This might be the solution, and I have to say... I love the small size and design... only if it had HT quality sound options, it would be better though.

this would be a great way to just surf the net screw with music and home movies as well as photshop and other basic stuff.

specially if your running a G3 or older .

Ah! I just realised that for that at 499, you dont even get a mouse and keyboard, nevermind a monitor.

You can get a full dell system, @2.8GHz with a 17 inch monitor for that price

Pathetic.

Regarding the topic question:

Because you can get a modded Xbox that does all those features, plus plays tons of games and emulators, all with a bigger hard drive for a cheaper price? :D

I like Apple and all (we have four Macs in my house and one PC), but selling the Mac Mini without even a mouse and a keyboard is really stupid. Almost as stupid as Apple making an iPod without a screen. Oh, wait.

Thanks. :) I'll look into it. (it looks quite promising)

...

edit:
I looked through - and it is what I'm looking for, but still too pricey when compared to even mod-xbox...

Yes. The banstick must be constantly stroked, lest it unleash its pent up fury all over...I mean, on us all.

Yea, you can get a dell for that price, but can you stick it in your pocket? :P

The Mac Mini is about the size of a friggin' gameboy player.

mr2mike that machine baselines at $1K. You'd have done better recommending a DVD player and a DVI bridge adapter if all this guy wants wants to do is play various DVD formats. There are a variety of them that run Linux (Apex is the first that come to mind) and have been softmodded to handle even more formats that the nearly countless ones that they shipped with. Many of these Linux based DVD players are 'networked' allowing them to get media off of PCs.

The bigger question becomes what you want to do with the PC while its plugged into the TV set.

well I didn't link to the shuttle with the thought that it was the be all end all solution, it's just that considering the media center origin of the thread, and the beleif early on that the mac mini was a living-room orientted machine, I thought I'd post a media center micro PC.

micro mac... micro PC... I was trying not to stray too far.

anyway, yeah it's not cheap, one could probably do a more economical job getting a bare case and building it @ home, or just as you said, one of those crazy multiformat DVD players.

"The bigger question becomes what you want to do with the PC while its plugged into the TV set."

well personally I just lie in my bed with my Gyration wireless kb/mouse and surf the net, watch anime, etc... basically anything that doesn't require a LOT of attention a the helm... if I wanna *use* the computer (ie: multitask) I use the desktop, if I wanna *relax* at the computer I use the bed and TV.

I dont use the TV to multi task on the PC since, well, you dont really have a lot of room to work with in 800x600, while I set my monitor resoltuion to 1280x1024.

with that said, I wish I had a bigger TV with better definition, 800x600 with small fonts is readable even on this old Hitachi, but it could be better. and the TV out on my old all in wonder is hurtin'. it sucks

I think Im gonna get one. I have always wanted to run Os X since it came out.

Would look cool on my table besides my 23 inch TFT and all PC barebones hidden under the table.

40gb hard drive :lol

Hmmm.... just thumbing through the Dell home and business catalog that just arrived, all of the machines outside of the Dimension 8400 ($999) ships with a 40GB drive.so....... :lol ?

Comparing it to Xbox is not a great idea, apart from the surfing side of things, but this compares to PCs very well. If I were in the market for a machine for surfing, storing photos, a small MP3 collection and watching movies, this would work pretty damned well. It might do well with a lot of iPod buyers, but complaints about the lack of composite video out are valid.

Wifi and Bluetooth are pricey options, not built in (together they add $150 to the pricetag, enough to get an Xbox). You'd be a fool to buy this over a modded Xbox.

There is a composite/s-video adapter, though.
