And all this happened over 3 months. The two "good" pictures here aren't even his best. So he dies. He nearly did. And no one would know who did it, however suspect.

If not, he might have to drop out of the race. Or people would simply not vote for a person that awful looking.

Instead, they popularized the notion that he was poisoned. People came to assume that it was by the opposition. They rallied around him, and the party became stronger as a result. Poisoning him might have done more harm than good to Yanukovich and co.
