His playing is often less than tasteful (although it's not always all about shred), but I hate to rip on the guy becuase a) he is one of the most technically proficient guitarists in history, and b) he's a super nice guy. He posts over at the John Petrucci forum quite often, and he's humble pie, really a nice guy.
He gets ripped on much more than he deserves too, mainly because people only know him for his shred.

Sucks? Uhh...hell no. Yeah, he may be more about shred than rhythm. But dammit if he isn't one of the best guitarists in the world. He has the technique to bring out the attitude out of his guitars, as seen in Speed Kills, he just chooses to play insanely fast. I wish I could play like that.
I'm not impressed with him as a musician by the simple fact that I wouldn't listen to anything he does for musical enjoyment. His skill level is amazing to watch, but that's about it. Kind of like a guy who can create a near photographic image with a pencil and paper, but has no creative talent whatsoever.

It's sad, Dimebag had just signed on to work on the album as well not more than a week before he was killed.
Mark Tremoti is also going to be playing on the upcoming album.
