Man I have been wanting to do it again, but I live in Japan and I don't know anyone who plays. Not a D&D fan at all.. Anyways what are people playing on the boards these days?

I would be game *rimshot* however I would miss the feeling of the dice, the worn out character (complete with crappy doodles) and the insane caffine intake for an all night session.

You can still have those! :D

I've played several games via IRC. Sometimes the game will use dicebots, other times the DM will roll them all, although other times the players had to roll on their own and then tell the DM.

dicebots would be cool... well if we can find some heads count me in

Tribe 8 has always been a favorite of mine. Set in a post-apocalyptic Montreal after a demon-invasion leveled humanity... you play a group of fesity Qebeqois raging against the goddesses that arose originally to liberate humanity from said demons, but have since become oppressive jerks.

Nice metaplot, lotsa angst, and a good, clean system.

Also playing Exalted which is pretty White-Wofly. High-twink-fantasy with a million supplements available... I wish it were a bit more... I dunno.. "contained"... but it's still a lotta fun.

I pretty much never played my whole life. But recently for some reason me and a group of friends took it up all of a sudden. We went from owning no books in the DnD series, to pretty much all the various player handbooks and such (all the class specific books, prestige classes ect).

It's fun, but I don't find myself much of a roleplayer (neither do most the guys I play with), and I feel like an idiot if I ever try to act in character. I'm more of a stat whore.

My friend who co-founded this RPG publishing company Eos Press (thought I'd give him a little plug) was really high on Exalted. But sadly I never got to play with him before I moved to Japan. It uses standard WW rules right? I don't know why I never got into the WW ruleset... but exalted does look hot

borghe

Loves the Greater Toronto Area
I regularly play D&D (frostburn) and Stargate SG-1. Though am thinking about getting my group into looking at a non-class based game. any thoughts on a nice skill based game? genre doesn't matter.

also slightly related, we picked up heroscape. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet (hopefully this weekend) but it seems fun.. like a simpler (and cheaper) version of heroclix/mageknight.

^^^ HERO System will fill your needs nicely, plus its genre neutral.

Tell him to release Weapons of the Gods and Delta Green already! I'm getting tired of waiting! :D

I like 20s CoC better too, since it's more in line with Lovecraft, but it's easier for me to get people to look at DG since it's more in line with modern SciFi.

I've been in a Call of Chthulu campaign ('20s) for the past year or so. We play around every three weeks. Lotsa fun.

Very little for the moment, but now that my work schedule is starting up:

Eberron (converting to HERO System)
trying to get my mom to play CoC, since I know she'll like it
working on a sort-of-hard SciFi game using HERO that'll be after the Eberron game
might try to run V:tR for a group of friends on tuesday nights coming up soon

I rarely get to play since I'm the only one that'll do the GM work. Crimson Dragon keeps offering to do it, but usually after I've got most of the original prep work done :p

So I take it that you like the hero system? :lol :lol

Anyone which much WW rules exp? how is the system in exalted compared to Vampire and the rest?

It might be the "awakened fantasy in a real-world setting" aspect. But it's not as "futuristic" as Shadowrun. Very medieval technology-wise, with a few Mad-Max style elements thrown in.

Yeah, Exalted uses WW rules (slightly tweeked)... and you get obscenely large die-pools, with 20+ D10's at a time. I need a die-rolling progam :p

Edit - To go into slightly more detail, it's a lot of contested rolls, augmented by "charms" (the Exalted's powers). My memories of Vampire and Werewolf are pretty fuzzy, but I think using magic abilities in Exalted comes into play here a lot more than it did in those games... in combat, characters use charm "combos" that combine offensive and defensive effects. Building out smart combos and managing your "essence" (mana) is a pretty big part of combat, so if you've got players that love to fiddle with mechanics, they'll dig on that aspect.

Now THAT does have a shadowrun feel to it for sure!

Yeah, I like Hero quite a bit since it lets me tinker. I like tinkering, and since I can build anything you can imagine with it, it's fun. Plus no levels/classes!

Exalted is sort of the midpoint between the old WoD rules and new WoD. It's closer to old WoD in most ways, but iirc (the books are downstairs, and i'm notorious for buying books i'll never use) it has fixed target numbers like new WoD. I'd advice doing something like a superheroic D&D game or Wuxia with it, since that's really where it excels as far as I've seen. It's a pretty cool setting, though hopefully it doesn't get to point where the old WoD did as far as consistency and stuff like the True Brujah.

edit: the obscenely large die pool bit is true

edit2: Tribe 8 seems pretty cool, I have a few other Dreampod games and the latest SilCore hardcover, but it seems like they're more focused on doing Special Effects right now and not RPGs.

Yeah, it sounds like they've all but abandoned their Tribe 8 line... and the line does kinda peter out after a point. But there are some outstanding books in there (particularly the earlier ones).

Also - 20's CoC rocks my socks.

I run a regular Eberron D&D game and play in a regular Exalted game. We also play Call to Cthulhu, Paranoia XP, or World of Darkness every once in a while as a break and mostly one shots. When the new Mage comes out I will be running a game of that.

I second the HERO System recommendation. I've played Champions off and on for years; looks like it's about to be on again, and I'm looking forward to throwing cars at supervillians for the first time in, oh, half a year or so. I'm also curious to see how White Wolf's Mage revamp turns out.

FnordChan, who is going to run a game of The End if he can find players who are in the mood to be horribly depressed

Champions, my favorite roleplaying game....ever. Still trying to get the guys in the local comic store to start running it, and break out of the D20 lockdown.

The latest revision of the HERO ruleset looks beastly. That book is just so....big. I haven't owned a copy since the old hardcover champions rulebook, with the (Perez?) cover, circa 1991 or so.

I am very, very fond of the d20 system, but it is notably harder to get folks to play something different than it used to be.

slayn

needs to show more effort.
I would definitely be up for playing some sort of D&D (or whatever the more general term... I guess just PnP rpg) over irc or similar. I could also probably provide some people if more is neccisary. In fact, I was just asking about this sort of thing...

My only problem is all I know of D&D comes from the infinity engine games so me and any people I find would require someone else who actually really knows what they're doing to be a DM but I imagine all of us could pick it up pretty quickly.

Blackace- Where are you in Japan. I'm also in Japan, and I play.

I've run several CoC games and there's a group of us in my area that will play D&D or something. Most of us have books or files for D&D.

I also have three books of a game called The Everlasting, which I play-tested. I can run you a game, no prob.

I am living in Yokohama. So if you are on the east side of Japan we are in business!

Much of it is actual clarification on how powers actually work, with lots of sidebars with examples of the powers/adders/limitations put to use. It's not nearly as intimidating as the book would make it seem. I'd guess that you'd have no trouble picking up any changes, which from what i understand are mostly point balances.

I'd really like to see what they could do with all color, but considering they put out tons of (really frigging good) material at a really good price, I won't complain.

I live in Gunma! Fancy that! It takes me about two hours to get down to Ueno, but hey, if you're willing to come up the Hibiya, I'm willing to meet you halfway!

I have a great modern CoC game set in Nikko that I'd just love to set up for some new blood.

Sure I'd give it a try! Nikko is a good place as any for a CoC setting! PM me your info and I'll get you mine tonight!

I have to know what kind of gamer you are.

I'm a good freeform GM, and I like rolling for events and skill-based checks, but I don't bury myself in the book. I don't usually run games which require initiative rolls. It's all about the characters in the setting.
