Whoa! Star Wars: Republic Commando Could Be Good!

I just had a 30min play through with the demo on the newish OXM and the impossible happened, I was impressed. This game peaked my interest when it first came out but I slowly forgot about it and did not care after a few months as I got new info on it, then I played it today……

Personally I think it’s a great mix of Metroid, Rainbow Six and has influence’s from other group combat games and from what I have played it pulls all the genre’s together, mixes them up and tosses out something great.

I had one problem; the squad mate’s ramblings get annoying quick. So annoying infact that they died by my hand after 5 mins and I completed the demo without them.

Anyone else think this could be one of 2005’s best games? It has gone from no where to sitting near the top of my most wanted list.

I dunno, man. The environments felt just as sterile as halo's, minus the charismatic enemies and allies. Also, the aiming felt a little off.

Is the demo with OXM the same as the one that came on the KOTOR II disk? If so, I was unimpressed. I thought that it was a decent first person shooter, but I didn't see anything in that demo that convinced me I needed to buy the game. Level design was repetitive and uninspired IMHO, and the robots you fought against seemed boring and stupid.

Perhaps the last few months of development will help to cure some of this, but at this point, I think I'd pass.

LOL, it gone down my most wanted list again seeing you guys hated it.

I should have kept my mouth shut and enjoyed the game having formed my own opinion but that is never goin to happen again (thank you interweb!!)

Hey, if you enjoyed it and are looking forward to it, then by all means, stay excited. I just personally didn't find much to get excited about in the demo I played, although I admit that a squad based, sci-fi shooter (ala Rainbow 6 meets Star Wars) sounds great. I'll still keep an eye on this one to see if it garners good reviews when it comes out, but at this point it's on my list of games that doesn't get me too excited at the moment.

The demo level is repetitive? It's 10 minutes long.

It seems pretty good to me (8/10 from the demo) it doesnt feel as tight as the better FPSs and the AI of the robots is weak (but they arent your only enemy...others are hopefully much smarter) but the squad stuff is cool if you put it to use and the Star Wars feel is definitely there.

The squad interaction was alright but it felt rather derivative. The sensitivity always felt off for me and it was way too easy. I was able to go through the entire KOTOR II demo just using my pistol and I set it to hard. :lol

I've been playing some near-complete code - I'm of two minds about it.

1. Enemy AI is very suspect at times. I suppose you can forgive droids for standing RIGHT NEXT TO YOU as they shoot at one of your squadmates at the other end (they're idiot droids, after all), but the crinkley Geonosian insect people are a lot more aggressive. Have only just reached the second part of the campaign on a ghost ship - the aliens in this level are frighteningly tough. Will have to reserve judgement.

2. Extremely linear - not as much in the way of tactical options as I'd hoped. You can instruct your squad to concentrate firing on one target, defend a position, search and destroy and regroup; and there are context-sensitive commands for individual units based on the landscape. Most of what I've encountered with the context-sensitive commands have pretty much handed the entire strategy to you on a platter - like having grenade and sniper placements positioned in a semi-circle around a door where a boss spider-mech comes rumbling out. Duh! There are moments of brilliance in the wide open spaces where you really do feel like you're commanding a squad around, but the limitations of the level design and command system becomes apparent when you're squashed back into the claustrophobic indoor/corridor environments.

3. Default weapon is like a mini-gun that shoots cheese pellets that eventually whittle down shields and stuff. Next to useless against Battledroids and Destroyers, and there's never enough ammo with the other weapons to take them down. Have often resorted to weaving in up close, melee attacking them, pulling back and repeating.

4. Everyone speaks in Kiwi. Your character, all the comms chatter - it's all in Kiwi. No offence to the Kiwis on the board, but I can't stand it. Why the hell couldn't Lucas have hired an actor who could at least FAKE and American accent?? At least that would've spared the bloody expense of redubbing all of Boba Fett's lines into Kiwi in the DVD release!

After playing the demo (it almost felt like they partly hide it on the KOTOR2 disc) it reminded me of how I thought another was going to play. A canceled game called Aliens: Marines. the demo played ok if a little restricting on the tactics (after playing full spectrum warrior).

the demo, although somewhat disappointing, shows some potential

the gun play is pretty fun, as are the scenarios they setup for you. the squad element doesnt really feel like its necessary however, it seems very difficult to screw up with it, such as putting your squadmates in teh wrong places.. there seems to be no way to make a wrong choice. the environments are well done, but bland... mostly i chalk that up to being on a cruiser of the robot dudes, maybe we'll see lush environments and creepy caverns elsewhere in the game. the sound effects are good overall and you cant go wrong with starwars music. hopefuly the full game will let us see more intersting combat scenarios/situations, environments and story
