Why Action Movies Today are Weak (Top Gun Appreciation)

Ok. So I saw a movie trailer for the new action flick Stealth coming out at the end of June.

I have a problem with flicks which involve fighter jets and end up using computer graphics for all of their footage. You see, I figure, if Top Gun can come out as such an awesome flick with amazing REAL footage of fighter jet fights, then there's no need to go to computer graphics unless it's a seamless cut. But its not a seamless cut. Now, I understand its probably a LOT cheaper to use a green screen then to hire pilots and comission F16s from the US Navy, so I don't really FAULT these movies for doing it (Behind Enemy Lines, Stealth, Broken Arrow), but at the same time, it's like these movies never have a shot at coming anywhere close to Top Gun. It's like saying a faked orgasm is as good or better than a real one. You may be fooled at first, and you might like it even for awhile, but sooner or later, you realize how empty it is when compared to the real thing.

Top Gun was awesome, and these movies cannot hope to top it unless they use real jets. Does anyone else feel this way?

I loved Top Gun back in the day, but the homoerotic overtones and real lack of danger/drama brings it down when talking about great movies.

Great action scenes to be sure, but the movie sucks pretty bad. And I'm a Cruise fan.

Oh, come ON! It was the 80's! EVERYONE was gay! If you lived in California and DIDN'T walk around in tight blue jeans with no shirt, then you were obviously hiding something.

Everything about the 80's was gay. Miami Vice? A Team? Shit... even the Ghostbusters. I mean, c'mon... 3 lonely scientists buy an old FIRE STATION to live in while the most outlandish one of the group vocally claims his pleasure at sliding 'down the pole'?

There should be a rule that you can't hold homosexual overtones against any movie that was made between 1981 and 1989. Unless it's called "The Big Chill".

Very true. I didn't mean to insinuate that Top Gun was alone in the sausagefest. To be honest, I thought of TG when I saw the preview for Stelth as well. I also wondered why TG hasn't been "done" up until now. If Stelth is half the movie that TG is, well, it will be pretty good.

A Top Gun thread without someone cursing Bruckheimer for killing their childhood or something? The shock! :lol

I was 10 when it came out. He didn't kill my childhood, I just saw Karate Kid II and The Three Amigos instead (multiple times). If Top Gun had been better, I guess it could have made an extra $50 from me.

The scene where a grinning, bubblegum-chewing Iceman gets in Maverick's face in the locker room and he does that little bite thing at Maverick is the most homoerotic moment in movie history, bar none.

Somebody HAS to know the scene I'm talking about. :D

Top Gun rocked, btw. One of those flicks you have to watch all the way through whenever it comes on.

I forgot about the Tom Clancy Plot Generator:
Communists devise a scheme to blackmail a congressman for ransom under the watchful eye of corrupt German officials (played by Americans with fake German accents). The plot twists when the Communists threaten to unravel the keystone of civilization with wild orgies, unless a sassy cop with street smarts can quell his pride long enough to stop the Communists once and for all. The movie ends with a mildly comical and/or ironic scene in which the Communists blow up or go to prison. Another satisfying tale of political intrigue and personal redemption closes, and we all walk away from this movie a little wiser.
