Why can't Nintendo create something like this?

I would hurt many a close friends for one of these Nintendo.

Sweet Render, I would buy one just to play Resident Evil 4 on it. But it would be soo expensive not to mention a battery hog. I was about to post the same thing.

looks like the cover is a display. Thats pretty cool actually so you could check waht song is playing without opening the thing.

too expensive

and what's with the cover?

:lol

I'm assuming the buttons and on the cover indicate that the system would play music mini-disks also which is a neat idea I guess. The lcd is poorly done but the concept is great.

They don't need to as long as Nintendo fanboys make renders like these.

The OLED display is interesting, but the layout and the 80's Walkman buttons are horrid. Also, just what would this store music on?

Edit: Mini CDRs/DVDRs makes sense, but i'll be damned if it put Easy Breezy on it

The buttons look cheap, but otherwise it's a sweet looking render, looks like it's based on the PSP from the gleaming black plastic, the cover concept is nice too, will have to be at least 25% smaller to compete with the PSP though.

The question was rhetoric but an 80's walkman buttons?

Come on give the guy some credit besides the LED and button configuartion that is a great mockup.

It would also need better and continual third party support. If it were $300, i'd get one to catch up on my GC backlog, not to mention the fact that i'm a whore for portable electronics.

It would be easy for developers to design games for a portable Gamecube because they already have the Dev-kits and know-how for it. Keeping mini-disk read time down would be the only hurdle. The color of those buttons are even uglier in portable form though.

why would you want a pricier gamecube with a smaller screen?

Too easy.

There really is no point criticising this thing since it's just a fanboy concept. Looks very sexy.

Well.... since criticism is the GAF way.... this thing has no triggers or z-button that I can see. And the depressed analogue sticks would be difficult. And the kidney shaped buttons suck (as they do on the standard cube controller).

But it looks sexy. Loving the LCD displays on the outside. And clamshell is smart - makes it easier to carry around and harder to scratch. Great job to whoever came up with it.

The style of the buttons is similar to the picture you posted, ironically. :lol i was thinking of a Realistic (Radio Shack brand) cassette player i had from the 80s when i erroneously used the Walkman brand.

Yes, it's a nice render, but considering the work shown on the rest of the host site, the designer(s) is familar with 3D software. The design is pretty good, but realistically it's a Gamecube controller molded onto a clam shell portable with the PSP's glossy black and silver scheme, and the front "feet" of the N64, or a Panasonic 3D0, as best i remember.

I would love something like this - in fact, not long ago, while moving between bouts of RE4 and DS, I found myself wanting a portable version of RE4. Not because it's a great game (which it is), but the style of play really suits short bursts of play.

Anyway, that mock-up looks good, but the controls look...uncomfortable. And I'm sure having controls directly over a drive like that can't be a good thing in terms of ruggedness.

Yeah I see the 3DO and N64 in it too it is quite obvious looking at the closed image. He should of thought out the button placement and colors out a bit more but none of it detracts from the overall concept which is pretty good. I like the buttons on the top though if not a bit too small but thats just me.

I want that -- now.

haha.. you know, I was thinking, I'm not sure if the artist had this in mind, but after look at that photo, would it at all be feasable to have the analog sticks pop in and out? Like, for example, if you needed to close the system, you just push the sticks in until they pop into place so you can close the lid -- then, during usage, you just push them back in to pop them out again?

Sounds plausible to me.

[edit]

Also, one more thing. For multiplayer games, how would this work? WiFi would have to be porgrammed initially, unless the system could translate controller feedback to wireless and others recieve the signal similarily. Then there's the whole issue with viewing the game from multiple screens.

that thing looks pretty cool, though I would widen it for comfort (the GBA SP is not very comfortable for my big hands).

Do first year computer animation students have nothing better to do than make shitty videogame console mock-ups?

hmmm.. and why would one want a pricier PS2 with a smaller screen? (psp)

why does everyone bitch about battery life for nintendo but if sony gets 4 hours then everyone is happy?

Gaf is a strange one sided bunch for sure. lol

PSP was designed to be ran off a battery. GC was not. If Nintendo managed to release a system like this with that screen and a three-hour battery life, i'd be very impressed, especially knowing their realistic battery estimates.

Doesn't the GC have a low power consumption rate, though? I remember reading docs that also mentioned how power conservative it was. Perhaps not enough to say "designed for portability", but considering that it's 5 year old tech, with smaller chip fab processes, amongst other components, would make energy usage a lot more efficient.

OLED as opposed to plain LED. It allows the LED screen to blend with the casing. Its the latest trend. I think SONY is putting this on their flagship mp3 and minidisc players.

Looks like a solid design concept to me...might need a little tweaking in terms of button sizing and spacing but its on the right track.
