Why do people hate Cam Newton?

1. He's black.
2. He's really good and they hate losing to him. I hate Tom Brady, but he's really good and I hate losing to him.

This right here. I have met Cam several times when he came to do community programs with the kids in my town, and he was always the nicest person who would stay and interact with every single kid there. I get really tired of people going out of their way to try and find reasons to hate a guy who is good at his job, loves doing it, and gives back to his community.

Yeah, i saw that letter thing.

That seemed like a pretty isolated incident. Has there been a lot of letters? And I don't mean like, ten or so. I'm sure there is a racial component to it, mixed in with sore losers.

Everyone thought Sherman was getting ragged on for being black, it was just that the media was painting him in that way. Once he started to get more and more press, people started to like him and the media moved away from him. Now he's as big and loud as he's always been and no one cares because he's so damn good.

Because Cam is awesome and loud and proud and black. He is cocky and capable of playing well enough to back it up.

Plus, him being black makes every mistake or potential mistake or rumor of youth a reason to judge his character.

But, you should not listen to me. I am an Auburn Tiger, so I am biased in favor of him.

Russ is the perfect "black" man. He does what he is told and doesn't make a scene. A black man expressing themselves is taboo.

This hits the same beats of the "cocky black athlete doesn't know his place" rhetoric you ALWAYS hear when a black athlete starts to dominate in a predominantly white sport.

Suddenly every thing they do is magnified to a level of parody. Now Cam Newton celebrating a touchdown is going to plunge America to a level of debauchery it has never experienced. How dare he!
 
I didn't like Cam when he was in college due to all the questions surrounding him, but I've really grown to like him in the NFL, and he has seemed to grow tremendously as a person too. Will be hoping he gets his first ring.

I used vanilla wafer to describe 3 athletes I find to be completely flavorless, but are the 3 archetypes that commentators against Cam demand him to act more like.

Hence why I followed up with celery, again flavorless--not some race-baiting term you all seem so adamant to jump onto. I'm not racist against white people. I dislike the implicit "white-person archetype" that people continually compare Cam to.
 
To me I think the big factors are:

1. His skin color.
2. Media coverage. A lot of players/teams showboat but due to Panthers success they are front page news. If Newton was on a 8-8 team and did his superman pose or what have you I doubt anyone gives a damn. Brady gets mocked on everything he does but no one talks about how animated Phillip Rivers is.
3. Manning's Last Chance > Super Bowl 50 > Carolina Panthers. They are the villains looking to ruin a story book ending.
 
I don't watch a lot of NFL, but doesn't he usually give a kid the football after every touchdown or something (at least that's what I remember seeing when I occasionally see the Panthers play)?
 
Racist sore losers. Not only did he beat their team and sexualize his celebration, he had fun doing it while being black.

That's only part of the reason though. The other reason is he says shnack instead of snack in that Oikos commercial. I'm sure that's the big reason right there.

You make some good points. Manning is an obvious cheater, yet here we are in Super Bowl week talking about Cam Newton celebrating too much, and the HGH is all but forgotten. It's a little bizarre.

I think the people that hate Cam are well in the minority. A few people like that one lady who wrote the letter got some publicity, but I don't think it is widespread at all. Now, if Cam was throwing 5 TDs on my favorite team and dancing after doing it, I would be hating him too. But as far as some mass hate around the league? I don't see it.
 
I think it's because he's black and confident, and he's making people face their own prejudices with his success and they aren't reacting well

I don't understand the hate for Cam, I think it has to be because he is black. I HATED Robert Griffin because I thought he was too hyped after his first season and he couldn't continue to put up those #'s with his style of play, I was right. I HATED Colin Kaepernick because he was clearly a product of great teams yet everyone thought he was the reason they were sso good when he wasn't, also, he tore up my Packers a lot... I was right. Russel Wilson is vanilla AF and boring, I can't stand him. Cam is amazing though, greatest mix of speed and arm/accuracy and he knows how to run without taking too many hits and he is absolutely carrying a garbage offense. Best QB in the league right now, the haters are blind or ignorant.

You're asking the wrong question. Why does it matter? Because people want their star QBs to be lifeless football drones who give stock answers to all questions, never show emotion (high or low), show up to do their job, and go home. QBs who emote get shit for it, at least early on before unquestioned success. Rodgers got criticism for showboating with his belt dance, at least until he won a SB. I don't understand this, at all, but that's the "why".

The better question is why should it matter, and the answer is there's no reason why that I can fathom that doesn't get into some bullshit platitudes about leadership.

THe choice of the word "loud" is interesting by itself. How is he loud? Is he louder than Tom Brady or Phillip Rivers? Who are constantly barking at refs/coachs/teammates? Because I've never heard them described as "loud".

as mentioned earlier in the thread - QB is much more scrutinized position and held to higher level considering you're the team leader. so it's a bigger deal for a QB to be egotistical than a kicker.

His presence is much more visually loud and showboating than those QBs. Even then, Brady is a cocky whiney bitch and he gets tons of shit. no one likes him other than NE fans. Rivers gets called out on his shit all the time.


if you've never heard the term "loud" being used in context other than audibly, then I can't help you.

It's not just that Cam Newton is black, or successful. It's that he has the audacity to revel in the fact that he is successful while being black.

He's one of the sacred cows of the NFL... So it's not really a surprise. Though personally I'll never look at him the same again, particularly after the antics he put on after he was caught.

There's no denying that there are some cultural/racial undertones to criticism of Cam Newton, but to act as if those are the only reasons people could have a problem with him isn't fair either.

There's also this culture of 'cred' in sports... As in, has Cam earned the right to celebrate like he does if he doesn't have a ring? I think that also plays into it with some fans.

I'm on SBNation football blogs every day talking shit in the comments sections. I use twitter mainly to shoot the shit about sports and videogames. I've seen basically none of it.

Not saying it doesn't happen, but I have no idea where it's happening and I'm not sticking my head in the sand at all.

This. I'm a Seahawks fan and I think Cam is a showoff but he's almost as good as he is cocky and I am rooting for the Panthers this weekend. If they win it'll take the sting out of our ejection two weeks ago.

Wilson is better all round though. Even his hair.
 
This is a Starbucks Christmas cup situation to me. The reaction to a thing is bigger and more widespread than the actual thing. Cam is not hated any more or less than any other succesful quarterback.

In fact, I'd guess the most hated quarterback by far is Tom Brady.
 
Probably has to do with his arrogance during the investigation he was involved in while at Auburn. His smugness while that was going on was pretty irritating, and I don't think most people have gotten past that. Also, the way he showboats obviously doesn't appeal to fans of the teams he's shredded this season. With that said, I still like Cam Newton and his enthusiasm, even though I was there when he beat the Ducks in the national championship. The dude's a winner and celebrates accordingly.

I couldn't think of a worse example tbh. Dude got ripped so much that he got the boot with no remorse. His rehearsed and practiced celebrations that defy the context for which they are happening is much of the reason people hate on Cam. It's not genuine.
 
I always liked Cam Newton until this season. I dislike him now because it's a mix of his preening and the Panther's success. There's something about a preening successful player who celebrates himself so much that I dislike.

Never had that problem with Newton before because the Panthers weren't as successful. The mix of the Panther's success, the excessive preening and self-congratulations of the team, plus the huge amounts of camera time that Newton and the Panthers have gotten has transitioned them from one of my favorite teams over the last 3 or 4 years to one of my, generally, least favorite teams.

Also, I dislike other people who preen and hate how everybody is pretending anybody disliking Newton is a double standard because Newton is black. I dislike JJ Watt especially after Hard Knocks was basically dedicated to him, I loath Johnny Football. If you don't think people hate JJ Watt or Johnny Football (esp in college), or any other successful, self-congratulatory player then you've come up with the narrative without looking at reality. I disliked Aaron Rodgers with the stupid title belt celebration and thank god he's stopped doing that.
