Why do people hate Cam Newton?

Saying it's because he's black is missing the mark. There are PLENTY of athletes, both black and white, who are hated because they give off an aura of perceived cockiness and arrogance. Some people don't like Cam for the same reason they didn't (don't) like Johnny Manziel. There is a fine line between being perceived as confident or arrogant. Cam is pretty smug and goes beyond the typical display of confidence present in many famous athletes, thus he is singled out.

Personally I'm torn. Some things he does seems to go to far, but at the same time, meh it's not really a big deal.

And what constitutes "cocky and arrogant" seems to vary based on the color of someone's skin. And again with the Manziel comparison.

Name me another quarterback besides Cam or Manziel who is on that level of arrogance on display during games. This is beyond screaming or fist pumps.

I don't recall Ray Lewis being hated because of arrogance either. He wasn't smug though, just hype. Race is a cop out answer.

Peyton Manning, Tom Brady...

What? Not even close. They don't rip away opposing teams flags from the crowd. They don't kiss their biceps, or give smug smirks to the crowd. When they speak to the reporters at the end of the games they give eye contact, complete answers, and engage with them.

please be joking..

Matt Simms and Srew Stanton both did some fun dances on the field this season. Kaepernick before the Niners sucked again.

I should have said relevant or high profile. The general public doesn't give a shit if they don't know who you are. Kaepernick did take some heat.

Google Kaepernick and arrogant.

Umm...

I'm not saying especially Tom Brady doesn't appear arrogant, he does. But neither are on the level of Cam. Race not even a factor.

please re-read your post in like 10-20 years

race is clearly a factor. to be clear, race and culture. they go hand in hand in this instance.

you're sitting here projecting ill intent on how someone smiles..

Considering that Manziel has barely seen the field since being drafted, I don't think it's TD celebrations that have hurt is public image. You are delusional if you believe that

Carson Palmer literally motioned for Seahawks fans to suck his dick and nobody cared.

I'm not projecting ill intent from anybody. I don't think Cam has any ill intent. But if you think you can't convey arrogance from a smirk, smile, or other types of body language, I don't know what to tell you. I think he is mostly just having fun, but it's really not hard to see why his apparent arrogance is off putting to some people, black or white. Manziel is the same way.

How is Manziel off-putting? I mean...he is off the field, which I guess is the same.

His public perception, and his high profile, followed him from college.

It's funny listening to ESPN and sports radio debating on why he is so disliked like it's not obvious. He's a successful black quarterback who acts like an ass whenever his team does something good. It's not rocket science.

yeah but the qualifiers are certainly telling

confidence vs. arrogance

smug vs. joy

take a situation. cam does something and smiles after. you think it's smug. you think it's arrogant. that says something about how you personally view him.

And it can't possibly be the fact that he acts like an ass when his team does something good.

Cam didn't even start being disliked when he and his team became good. Everyone knows how widely mocked and degraded he was for the "towel on head" shit when the Panthers would suck.

The guy has had every single action he's done put under a magnifying glass since the second he came in the league.

Uh, no. It couldn't possibly be that Cam is actually trying to convey smugness or arrogance huh? I don't think he looks smug every time he smiles. Not even most times. But there is different body language conveying different things. It's not perception.

Really, I'm pretty sure Cam would tell you he's being arrogant and say he doesn't give a fuck. He's basically implied so multiple times. I mean really, he knows how "then keep me out of the endzone" sounds. He's not dumb. He just doesn't care. Which is FINE. But just expect to make some people dislike you that way.

Lmao it's because he's black and you're Delusional if you think otherwise. If he looked like Rob Gronkowski he would be seen as an American hero.

Same reason people hate Serena Williams even tho she's not as outlandish or cocky. Cause she's black and dominant.

It's because he's black playing a typically white position.

I don't remember this uproar with Russel Wilson, Jameis Winston, Michael Vick, etc.

"Wow! He's so fun! He's having such a good time out there!"

Yeah he's fun to watch, but for whatever reason people seem to overlook his arrogance and borderline narcissism. Not to mention his sulking-in-the-corner-while-we-lose act when he's on the losing side of things,

Also I hate Cam Newton because he's gonna win MVP over a way more deserving player in Russell Wilson!

But his play style and celebrations are fine. Put some fucking fun back in the No Fun League.

::cam while losing::

"yeah well he needs to quit sulking on the bench. and what's with that towel he puts on his head??"

::cam while winning::

"yeah well he needs to quit smiling so damn much. it's smug. and what's with all the celebrating when his team does well??"

It's because he went to Auburn.

Crimson Tide fan here, so that's my excuse. Dude bodied us so hard man.

His general hate is because he's an ultra cocky black guy, who keeps winning. How dare a negro not know his place in society.

Then there are people who hate his pouty ass attitude from his first couple pro seasons. He seems to have grown up a lot though, so it's time to give him a break.

Look people, I think the world at large is racist as hell. I have no argument there. And the truth about Cam is probably somewhere in between with race playing a factor for some and not for others. I just don't think race is the primary motivating factor for the Cam hate. Plenty other black quarterbacks show joy and don't get any hate.

And just because someone dislikes him, or what he does, doesn't make them racist.

how are these anything other than him not acting the way you want him to do? I don't understand how not wanting to talk to reporters is being arrogant and cocky

also lol "smug smirks"

yeah it's a race and culture thing. they go hand in hand in this instance. I think the crux of it is that a lot of people can't relate to how cam emotes. cam shows joy in a totally different way than many NFL fans are used to. it's also that a lot of fans have preconceived notions about how people should act at the QB position and those preconceived notions are largely based on how white people did it. so some people have a hard time seeing the racial aspect because in their mind they just want cam to act like every other QB that came before him.

It's not, it's just a vocal minority. This is nothing compared to if and when Jameis gets to the Superbowl. That's when the topic will start to get heated, because Jameis doesn't hide how much of an alpha leader he is and that's gonna rub alot of people the wrong way.
